Oil Change Guide: 2025 Triumph Scrambler 1200

The 2025 Triumph Scrambler 1200 represents the adventure-styled branch of Triumph's modern classic lineup, sharing its engine architecture with the Bonneville T120. The 1,200cc liquid-cooled parallel twin with SOHC 8-valve High Torque heads delivers strong, tractable power that suits both on-road touring and light off-road riding.

Available in XC (crossover) and XE (off-road-focused) variants, the Scrambler 1200 features higher ground clearance, longer-travel suspension, and rugged styling compared to the standard Bonneville range. The wet sump lubrication system is identical to the T120 platform, meaning filter and drain procedures are the same across both families.

The higher ground clearance of the Scrambler makes underneath access slightly more comfortable than lower-slung Bonnevilles, and the off-road-oriented XE variant features bash plate protection that must be removed before accessing the drain plug.

Triumph recommends a 10,000-mile service interval. Riders who regularly venture off-road or operate in dusty conditions should consider shorter intervals of 5,000-6,000 miles to maintain optimal engine health.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Warm the Engine

Start the Scrambler 1200 and let it idle for 3-5 minutes to warm the oil to operating temperature. The 1,200cc engine warms up reasonably quickly. Warm oil flows faster and suspends more contaminants than cold oil, leading to a more thorough drain.

Step 2: Position on Level Ground

Place the motorcycle on a center stand or paddock stand on level ground. The Scrambler 1200 must be perfectly upright for an accurate oil level reading. Note that the longer-travel suspension and higher seat height of the Scrambler may require a taller paddock stand than standard Bonnevilles.

Step 3: Remove the Bash Plate (XE Models Only)

For Scrambler 1200 XE: The bash plate (engine skid guard) must be removed to access the drain plug. Using a 5mm Allen key or 10mm hex socket (depending on your model year fasteners), remove the 4-6 bolts securing the bash plate. Set bolts aside safely and place the plate on a clean surface.

For Scrambler 1200 XC: The XC may not have a full bash plate. If yours does, follow the same removal procedure above.

Step 4: Open the Oil Fill Cap

The oil filler cap is located on the right side of the crankcase. Rotate counterclockwise to remove and set on a clean rag. This vents the crankcase to atmosphere, enabling smooth gravity-driven drainage.

Step 5: Position the Drain Pan

Place a 4+ liter drain pan beneath the engine. The drain plug is on the bottom center of the crankcase. On the XE, this is now accessible after bash plate removal. Ensure the pan is positioned correctly — off-road riding deposits mud and debris around the lower engine that should be cleaned before positioning the pan.

Step 6: Remove the Drain Plug

Using a 17mm socket on a 3/8" drive ratchet, loosen and remove the drain bolt. Allow the oil to drain completely — the 1,200cc engine holds approximately 3.0 liters with filter, so expect 5-8 minutes for full drainage.

Warning: Oil will be hot (150-200°F / 66-93°C). Wear nitrile gloves. The Scrambler 1200's exhaust headers run along the right side — be mindful of contact.

Step 7: Remove the Oil Filter

The spin-on oil filter is located on the lower front-right side of the engine, just behind the front cylinder. Use a strap-type filter wrench or a 76mm cup wrench, turning counterclockwise. Residual oil will spill as the seal breaks.

Critical: When the filter separates from the engine, confirm the old rubber sealing gasket came off with the filter. A gasket double-stacked behind the new filter will cause a significant oil leak on startup.

Step 8: Clean the Filter Mounting Surface

Wipe the engine's filter mounting flange with a clean rag. Check for gouges, old gasket material, or off-road debris (mud, grit). The Scrambler's off-road use means extra attention to cleanliness here.

Step 9: Install the New Filter

Lubricate the new filter's rubber gasket with a thin film of fresh 10W-40 oil. Hand-thread the filter onto the engine adapter until the gasket contacts the mounting surface, then tighten 3/4 to 1 full turn further by hand.

Do not use tools to tighten. Hand pressure provides adequate sealing force. Wrench tightening can distort the gasket.

Step 10: Replace Drain Plug with New Washer

Clean the drain plug and inspect threads. Replace the aluminum crush washer with a new one (Triumph T6528002, 16 x 22 x 1.5mm). Crush washers are single-use components — they harden and deform during initial torquing.

Reinstall the drain plug and torque to specification:

Warning: The crankcase is cast aluminum. Over-tightening strips the threads. Stripped case threads require Helicoil repair or full case replacement — a costly mistake.

Step 11: Add Fresh Oil

Using a narrow-spout funnel, pour 2.5 liters (2.6 qt) of fresh 10W-40 fully synthetic motorcycle oil meeting API SJ+ and JASO MA2 specifications.

Recommended oils: - Triumph Original 10W-40 (Mobil 1-manufactured) - Motul 7100 10W-40 (100% ester synthetic, excellent for off-road use) - Castrol Power1 10W-40 - Shell Advance Ultra 10W-40

Important: Never use automotive oils with "Energy Conserving" labels. The friction modifiers in these oils will cause the Scrambler 1200's wet multi-plate clutch to slip, particularly under load during off-road riding.

Step 12: Circulate and Settle

Refit the oil filler cap. Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes. This circulates fresh oil through all passages and pressurizes the new filter. Verify the oil pressure warning (if equipped) extinguishes promptly.

Shut off the engine and wait 30-60 seconds for oil to drain back into the sump.

Step 13: Final Oil Level Check

With the Scrambler 1200 upright on level ground, read the sight glass on the right crankcase. Oil level should sit between the upper and lower marks. Add oil in small 100ml increments if needed.

Do not overfill. Excess oil causes foaming and increased crankcase pressure. The 1,200cc engine has a moderate sump capacity — precision matters here.

Step 14: Reinstall the Bash Plate (XE Models)

If you removed the bash plate, reinstall it now. Torque bolts to the manufacturer's specification (typically 10-12 Nm for bash plate fasteners — check your manual). Verify the plate is secure and not rattling.

Step 15: Inspection Ride

Ride 1-2 miles at moderate speeds. After the ride, with the bash plate removed on XE models if necessary, inspect for oil leaks. Recheck the sight glass level with the bike vertical.

Tips, Warnings & Common Mistakes

Mistake Consequence How to Avoid
Using "Energy Conserving" automotive oil Wet clutch slippage, especially under off-road load Use only JASO MA2 motorcycle oil
Reusing the aluminum crush washer Drain plug oil leak Replace washer every service (T6528002)
Over-tightening the drain plug Stripped aluminum crankcase threads Torque to 25 Nm with a wrench
Double-gasketing the filter Major oil leak on startup Verify old gasket removed with old filter
Forgetting to remove bash plate before draining (XE) Can't access drain plug, frustration Always remove bash plate first on XE models
Overfilling past upper sight glass mark Oil foaming, pressure, seal leaks Fill between marks, bike upright
Not accounting for off-road contamination Abrasive particles in fresh oil Clean lower engine area before starting
Checking oil level on side stand False low reading — bike is tilted Center stand or paddock stand only

Oil Disposal

Used motor oil is hazardous waste. Never pour it down drains, into soil, or mix with general waste.

Where to recycle in the United States: - AutoZone — Free oil and filter recycling, all locations - O'Reilly Auto Parts — Free recycling, no purchase needed - Advance Auto Parts — Free oil and filter recycling - Walmart Auto Care Centers — Most locations accept used oil - Local hazardous waste facilities — Earth911.com for locations - Triumph dealerships — Many accept DIY rider oil (call ahead) - Off-road riding areas — Some designated staging areas have oil recycling bins; never dump oil in nature

Used filters: Drain for 24 hours (pierce dome end, place filter-down), seal in a bag, recycle with oil.
