Oil Change Guide: 2025 Triumph Bonneville T120

The 2025 Triumph Bonneville T120 is the modern iteration of one of the most iconic motorcycle platforms in history. Powered by a 1,200cc liquid-cooled parallel twin with SOHC 8-valve heads, the T120 delivers smooth, torquey performance that honors the spirit of the original 1959 Bonneville while benefiting from modern refinement, fuel injection, and electronic ride aids.

This High Torque engine is a top seller for Triumph worldwide, known for its character, reliability, and excellent aftermarket support. The wet sump oiling system stores oil in the crankcase and the engine shares lubrication between the engine internals and the wet multi-plate clutch.

Triumph's recommended service interval for the Bonneville T120 is 10,000 miles, but many riders and independent shops recommend 5,000-6,000 miles or annually for optimal engine longevity, especially given the Heritage character of this motorcycle.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Warm the Engine

Start the T120 and let it idle for 3-5 minutes until the oil reaches normal operating temperature. The Bonneville's 1,200cc parallel twin warms up relatively quickly. Warm oil drains faster and carries suspended contaminants with it. Do not change oil on a completely cold engine.

Step 2: Position on Level Ground

Place the motorcycle on its center stand or a paddock stand on level ground. The T120 must be perfectly upright for accurate oil level checking through the sight glass. Do not use the side stand.

Step 3: Open the Oil Fill Cap

The oil fill cap is located on the right side of the crankcase. Twist counterclockwise to remove and set it on a clean rag. This allows air to enter and assists gravity drainage.

Step 4: Position the Drain Pan

Place a 4+ liter drain pan beneath the engine. The drain plug is on the bottom center of the crankcase. Position the pan to catch oil flowing downward.

Step 5: Remove the Drain Plug

Using a 17mm socket on a 3/8" drive ratchet, loosen and remove the drain bolt. Allow the oil to drain completely — approximately 5-7 minutes.

Warning: Oil will be hot (150-200°F / 66-93°C). Wear nitrile gloves. The exhaust header pipes run along the right side of the engine — avoid contact.

Step 6: Remove the Oil Filter

The spin-on oil filter is located on the lower front-right side of the engine, just behind the front cylinder head. Using a strap-type filter wrench or a 76mm cup wrench, turn the filter counterclockwise to remove.

As the filter comes loose, residual oil will spill. Use a rag to catch drips.

Important: Verify that the old rubber gasket comes off with the filter and is not stuck to the engine mounting flange.

Step 7: Clean and Prepare the Filter Mount

Wipe the filter mounting surface on the engine clean with a shop rag. Inspect the surface for scratches or debris. Clean, smooth surfaces prevent leaks.

Step 8: Install the New Filter

Apply a thin film of fresh 10W-40 oil to the new filter's rubber gasket. Hand-thread the new filter onto the adapter until it contacts the mounting surface, then tighten an additional 3/4 to 1 full turn.

Never use a wrench to tighten a spin-on oil filter — hand-tightening is sufficient and prevents gasket damage.

Step 9: Replace Drain Plug with New Washer

Clean the drain plug and inspect threads. Replace the aluminum crush washer (Triumph T6528002 or equivalent 16 x 22 x 1.5mm aluminum washer). Never reuse old crush washers — they deform permanently and will leak.

Reinstall the drain plug and torque to specification:

Warning: The crankcase is cast aluminum. Over-tightening will strip the threads. Use a torque wrench.

Step 10: Add Fresh Oil

Using a narrow-spout funnel, slowly pour 2.5 liters (2.6 qt) of fresh 10W-40 fully synthetic or semi-synthetic motorcycle oil meeting API SJ+ and JASO MA2 specifications.

Recommended oils: - Triumph Original 10W-40 (Mobil 1-manufactured) - Motul 7100 10W-40 (100% ester synthetic) - Castrol Power1 10W-40 - Shell Advance Ultra 10W-40

Critical: Do NOT use automotive oils with friction modifiers (labeled "Energy Conserving" or "Resource Conserving"). These will cause the T120's wet multi-plate clutch to slip. Always verify JASO MA2 certification.

Step 11: Check Oil Level and Circulate

Reinstall the oil fill cap. Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes to circulate oil through the system and fill the new filter. The oil pressure light should extinguish within seconds.

Turn off the engine and wait 30-60 seconds for oil to settle back into the sump.

Step 12: Final Oil Level Check

With the motorcycle upright on level ground, check the sight glass on the right side of the crankcase. The oil level should be between the upper and lower marks. Add oil in small increments if needed.

Do NOT overfill. Overfilling can cause oil foaming, increased crankcase pressure, and oil seepage. The T120's parallel twin engine is sensitive to oil level.

Step 13: Reset Service Indicator

The 2025 Bonneville T120 features a digital instrument cluster with service reminders. Press the info/mode button on the left handlebar switch to navigate to the service menu. The exact procedure varies by model year firmware — refer to your Owner's Manual for the specific reset sequence.

If your T120 has a simpler analog-style display, there may not be a resettable service reminder — track mileage manually.

Step 14: Test Ride

Take the Bonneville on a 1-2 mile ride at moderate speeds. After the ride, inspect for oil leaks around the filter and drain plug. Re-check the oil level.

Tips, Warnings & Common Mistakes

Mistake Consequence How to Avoid
Using "Energy Conserving" automotive oil Friction modifiers cause wet clutch slippage, rough shifting Always use JASO MA2 motorcycle oil
Reusing the aluminum crush washer Drain plug oil seepage Replace washer every change (Triumph T6528002)
Over-tightening drain plug Stripped aluminum crankcase threads Torque to 25 Nm with a calibrated wrench
Double-gasketing the filter Major oil leak from filter housing Verify old gasket came off with removed filter
Overfilling past upper sight glass mark Oil foaming, crankcase pressure, seal leaks Fill to between marks with bike upright
Checking oil level on side stand False reading — bike must be upright Center stand or paddock stand only
Forgetting to circulate oil before final check Incomplete level reading, false low Idle engine 1-2 minutes, then check

Oil Disposal

Used motor oil is hazardous waste and must be recycled. Never pour used oil down drains, into soil, or into household trash.

Where to recycle in the United States: - AutoZone — Free used oil and filter recycling at all locations - O'Reilly Auto Parts — Free recycling - Advance Auto Parts — Free oil and filter recycling - Walmart Auto Care Centers — Accepts used oil at most locations - Local hazardous waste facilities — Check Earth911.com - Many Triumph dealerships — Accept used oil from DIY riders (call ahead)

Used filters: drain for 24 hours (pierce dome, sit filter-end down), seal in plastic bag, recycle.
