Step by Step Instructions
Step 1: Warm the Engine
Start the KTM 1290 Super Adventure and let it idle for 5 to 10 minutes, or after arriving from a ride, perform the drain while the engine is still at operating temperature. The LC8 V-twin uses 3.3 litres of 10W-50 synthetic which is relatively thick when cold. A warm engine thins the oil for a more complete drain. Shut off the engine and park on a level surface.
Step 2: Position the Bike
The 1290 Super Adventure comes with a centre stand as standard -- use it. The centre stand keeps the bike perfectly level, which is critical for an accurate oil level check later. Ensure the bike is stable. Lay cardboard or a drop cloth beneath the engine to catch drips.
Step 3: Gain Access to the Drain Plug and Filter
Depending on your accessory setup, you may need to remove or adjust the following for access: - Lower engine guard / skid plate (if fitted) -- typically two 10mm bolts - Radiator deflectors -- may need loosening to reach the filter housing - Side panniers -- only if they obstruct your access angle
Tip: If the bike has KTM genuine engine bars and a skid plate, remove the skid plate first. It will save frustration when reaching under the engine.
Step 4: Remove the Oil Fill Cap
Locate the oil filler cap on the top right of the engine, on the valve cover behind the radiator. Twist counterclockwise to remove. This vents the crankcase and allows a free-flowing drain. Set it on a clean rag where it will not be knocked away.
Step 5: Position the Drain Pan
Place a 5-litre oil drain pan beneath the engine. The LC8 drain plug is on the front underside of the crankcase, accessible through the opening between the lower frame tubes and any engine protection bars. A larger pan (5L minimum) is recommended for the 3.3-litre drain volume plus a safety margin.
Step 6: Remove the Drain Plug
Using a T45 Torx bit on a 3/8 ratchet, loosen the drain plug by turning counterclockwise. The KTM LC8 sump plug can be tight from the factory. Break it loose with firm pressure, then finish removing by hand, guiding the plug out so it does not fall into the pan of hot oil.
Warning: The oil will be hot. The 1290 LC8 engine reaches high operating temperatures. Wear nitrile gloves and safety glasses. The exhaust headers on the V-twin are directly adjacent to the drain area -- do not rest your arms on them.
Step 7: Drain All the Oil
Allow the oil to drain completely. With 3.3 litres, expect 10 to 15 minutes on a warm engine. During this time, inspect the drain plug for a magnetic tip -- a light metallic film is normal for the LC8, especially during early life. Large metallic particles or a "glittery" appearance is a concern and may indicate abnormal wear.
Step 8: Replace the Drain Plug Washer and Reinstall
Remove and discard the old M12 copper crush washer. Replace it with a new one. Thread the drain plug into the crankcase by hand, confirming it spins smoothly for 4 to 5 full turns. Once hand-tight, use a torque wrench set to 30 Nm to tighten to specification.
Important: The LC8 crankcase is precision-machined aluminium. The drain plug thread is larger (M12) than on smaller KTMs, hence the higher 30 Nm torque spec. Do NOT exceed 30 Nm -- if it does not reach spec, the threads may already be damaged. 30 Nm is not a suggestion; it is the correct clamp load for the M12 copper washer to seal properly.
Step 9: Remove the Oil Filter Housing
The oil filter housing on the 1290 Super Adventure is located on the underside/front of the engine, slightly to the right. It uses the same cartridge-style filter as other LC8 engines. Using a 32mm socket, unscrew the housing cap counterclockwise. It may require significant force initially due to engine heat cycles baking the O-rings.
Have the drain pan beneath, as oil will drip from the housing. Pull the housing free and remove the old filter cartridge. Remove both O-rings from the housing cap grooves. Inspect the crankcase bore for any stuck rubber -- a leftover O-ring will cause a major oil leak.
Step 10: Install New Filter and O-Rings
Place the new O-rings into the grooves on the housing cap. Apply a thin film of clean new oil to both O-rings. Insert the new filter cartridge with the spring end facing inward (toward the crankcase). Ensure the cartridge is fully seated and the housing cap closes evenly.
Step 11: Reinstall the Filter Housing
Thread the housing assembly back into the crankcase by hand, keeping it perfectly straight. Cross-threading will damage the crankcase bore and require an expensive repair. Once it bottoms out, use the 32mm socket and torque wrench to tighten to 20 Nm. Do not go beyond this specification.
Step 12: Add New Oil
Pour 3.0 litres of 10W-50 fully synthetic JASO MA2 oil into the filler hole using a funnel. Pause and let it settle for about 30 seconds before proceeding.
**Recommended oils for the KTM LC8 1301cc: - Motul 7100 10W-50 Ester -- excellent shear stability for this high-output twin (~160hp) - Castrol Power1 Racing 10W-50 -- proven in LC8 engines, widely available - KTM POWERPARTS 10W-50 -- OEM specification oil, sold in 1-litre bottles - Liqui Moly Street Race 10W-50 -- good value alternative
Warning: Do NOT use automotive oils with "Energy Conserving" labels. The LC8 shares oil between the engine, wet clutch, and gearbox. Friction modifiers WILL cause clutch slippage. Use only JASO MA2 certified oil.
Step 13: Circulate Oil and Check Level
- Install and hand-tighten the oil filler cap
- Start the engine and let it idle for 2 to 3 minutes
- Watch the TFT display for the oil pressure warning -- it should clear within 3 seconds
- Turn off the engine and wait 1 to 2 minutes for oil to settle
- On the centre stand (bike fully level), check the oil sight glass on the right side of the clutch cover
- The oil should be between the upper and lower marks
- If below the lower mark, add in 100ml increments and recheck
- Do NOT fill past the upper mark -- overfilling causes crankcase pressure, oil foaming, and potential leaks
Tip: The 1290 Super Adventure sight glass is on the right clutch cover. It may be partially obscured by the frame. Use a bright LED flashlight and read from the front-right angle for the clearest view.
Step 14: Final Inspection
- Check for leaks at the drain plug with a flashlight
- Check for leaks at the filter housing cap
- Verify the oil filler cap is secure
- Reinstall any bodywork, skid plates, or deflectors removed for access
- Clean any spilled oil from the engine, frame, and exhaust
- Reset the service interval on the TFT display (Settings > Service > Oil > Reset)
- Take a test ride of 10 to 15 minutes, then inspect for leaks a final time
Tips, Warnings & Common Mistakes
Helpful Tips
- Buy 4 x 1-litre bottles -- you will use approximately 3.3L and the spare is handy for top-up
- The LC8 engine is known for running hot, especially the 2021+ generation with the updated cylinder heads. Check oil level between services on long rides
- For touring or hot-climate riding, Motul 7100 is widely considered the top choice by the LC8 community
- Keep a spare drain plug washer and filter cartridge in your luggage on extended tours
- The factory service interval is 10,000 km -- many riders shorten this to 7,500 km for severe use (dust, heat, sustained high RPM)
- If you ride in dusty conditions frequently, consider changing oil and filter more often
Warnings
- NEVER use automotive oil with friction modifiers. The LC8 wet clutch is very sensitive to oil additive packages.
- NEVER start the engine without confirming adequate oil level. The V-twin uses an oil pump under the sump and dry running causes immediate bearing damage.
- NEVER over-torque the drain plug or filter housing. Both thread into the aluminium crankcase directly.
- NEVER ride the bike with the skid plate or deflectors removed after the service -- replace them before the test ride.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
| Mistake | Consequence | Prevention |
|---|---|---|
| Over-torquing drain plug above 30 Nm | Stripped crankcase threads, major repair | Use torque wrench, set to 30 Nm |
| Reusing the copper drain plug washer | Oil leak, messy engine | Always replace the washer |
| Using automotive oil instead of motorcycle oil | Wet clutch slip and gearbox wear | JASO MA2 certification mandatory |
| Checking oil on the side stand | Inaccurate reading -- false low | Centre stand or level paddock stand only |
| Forgetting to remove/reinstall lower body panels | Inability to reach drain plug or filter | Plan access before starting |
| Leaving old O-rings on housing or in crankcase | Catastrophic oil leak on startup | Verify both old O-rings are removed |
| Overfilling past upper sight glass mark | Foaming, increased crankcase pressure, seal leaks | Add incrementally and recheck |
Oil Disposal
Used 10W-50 synthetic oil from the LC8 engine is hazardous waste and must be handled properly. Never dispose of it in the environment.
- Pour the used oil into a clean container with a secure lid (empty oil bottles are ideal)
- Take it to an approved recycling centre: - Auto parts retailers (AutoZone, OReilly, Advance Auto Parts) accept used oil at most locations - Motorcycle dealers, especially KTM/Husqvarna authorised service centres - Municipal hazardous waste collection facilities
- Include the old filter cartridge for recycling at the same facility
- Do NOT mix motor oil with any other automotive fluids
- Label the storage container clearly and keep away from children, pets, and heat sources
