Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Warm the Engine
Start the Rebel 500 and let it idle for 3-5 minutes. The 471cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin warms quickly. Warm oil drains more completely. Park on a level surface and shut off the engine.
Step 2: Position the Bike Upright
The Rebel 500 should be upright and perfectly level for an accurate oil level check. Use a rear stand if available, or have a helper hold the bike. Do NOT perform this oil change with the bike on the side stand — the reading will be inaccurate.
Step 3: Remove the Seat and Oil Fill Cap
Remove the Rebel 500 seat (typically held by a single bolt or quick-release mechanism). Locate the oil fill cap/dipstick under or near the seat area. Remove the fill cap to allow air into the oil tank for complete draining.
Step 4: Position the Drain Pan
Place a minimum 3-quart capacity drain pan beneath the engine drain plug. The Rebel 500 uses less oil than the 1100, but a 4-quart pan is still recommended.
Step 5: Remove the Drain Plug
Using a 12mm hex socket on a 3/8 inch drive ratchet, loosen the drain plug counterclockwise. Remove by hand for the last few turns — be ready for oil flow.
Warning: Oil may be warm. Wear gloves and eye protection.
Step 6: Drain the Oil Completely
Allow all oil to drain. This takes approximately 10 minutes. Inspect the drain plug and drained oil for unusual debris or metallic material.
Step 7: Replace the Drain Plug Sealing Washer
Remove the old aluminum sealing washer and replace with a new Honda 90471-PCP-000 or equivalent. Do NOT reuse the crushing washer — it is designed for single-use only.
Step 8: Reinstall the Drain Plug
Clean the drain plug and seating surface. Install with new washer, hand-tighten, then torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Do not over-torque. The Rebel 500 crankcase is aluminum. Exceeding 25 Nm may strip threads.
Step 9: Remove the Old Oil Filter
Locate the spin-on oil filter on the engine (typically on the left or front side). Position catch rags below. Use a spin-on filter wrench to loosen, then remove by hand. Check the mounting surface for the old gasket.
Step 10: Prepare the New Oil Filter
Before installing: 1. Lubricate the new filter rubber gasket with a thin layer of clean 10W-30 motorcycle oil 2. Confirm the old filter gasket was fully removed (inspect mounting surface carefully) 3. Do NOT pre-fill this filter — it is angled and will spill when installed
Step 11: Install the New Oil Filter
Thread the new filter on by hand until the gasket contacts the mounting surface. Tighten an additional 3/4 to 1 full turn by hand.
Hand-tighten only. No tools.
Step 12: Add New Oil
Using a funnel, pour approximately 2.2 quarts (2.1 liters) of SAE 10W-30 motorcycle oil into the fill port. Use Pro Honda GN4 or HP4 10W-30, or equivalent API SG+ rated oil with JASO MA/MA2 certification.
Note: Use 10W-30 specifically for this Honda parallel-twin. Do NOT use 20W-50 or car oil.
Step 13: Verify Oil Level
- With the bike upright, screw the oil fill cap/dipstick back on and tighten
- Start the engine and idle for 2-3 minutes
- Shut off engine and wait 2-3 minutes for oil to settle
- Remove the seat, remove the dipstick (wipe it clean), then re-seat it WITHOUT screwing it in
- Check oil level — it should be between the upper and lower marks
- Add oil in small increments if below the lower mark
- When correct, tighten the fill cap and reinstall the seat
Step 14: Final Checks
- Check for leaks at drain plug and oil filter
- Wipe any spilled oil
- Dispose of used oil and filter (see below)
- Record the service in your maintenance log
Tips, Warnings and Common Mistakes
Helpful Tips
- Oil recommendation: Pro Honda GN4 10W-30 or HP4 10W-30 (semi-synthetic). Both meet JASO MA specs and are available at Honda dealers.
- Shared parts: The Rebel 500 shares its oil filter and drain plug washer with the Rebel 1100 — convenient for multi-bike owners.
- Check frequently: The 471cc engine may consume oil under extended highway use. Check the dipstick every 500-1,000 miles.
Warnings
- NEVER use automotive oils with friction modifiers — causes clutch slippage on the wet-clutch Rebel 500.
- NEVER over-torque the drain plug — aluminum crankcase threads are easily damaged.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
| Mistake | Consequence | How to Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Using 20W-50 oil | Wrong viscosity for Honda parallel-twin | Use 10W-30 |
| Using car oil | Clutch slippage | Verify JASO MA/MA2 |
| Checking oil with dipstick screwed in | Inaccurate reading, overfill risk | Check with cap just seated |
| Over-torquing drain plug | Stripped aluminum crankcase | Torque to 25 Nm only |
| Reusing sealing washer | Oil leak | Replace washer every time |
| Double-gasketing filter | Heavy oil leak | Verify old gasket removed |
Oil Disposal
Used motor oil must be recycled. Never pour it into drains, trash, or on the ground.
- Transfer oil to a sealed container (empty oil jugs work well)
- Drop off at: - AutoZone — free recycling - O'Reilly Auto Parts — free oil and filter recycling - Advance Auto Parts — free oil recycling - NAPA Auto Parts — check local availability
- Include the old oil filter
- Municipal recycling or hazardous waste facilities also accept oil
- Never mix with other automotive fluids
