Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Warm the Engine
Start the Rebel 300 and idle for 3-5 minutes. The 286cc single-cylinder warms up quickly. Park on a level surface and shut off the engine.
Step 2: Keep the Bike Upright
Position the bike upright and level. Use a rear stand or have a helper steady the bike. Do NOT use the side stand — oil level readings will be inaccurate.
Step 3: Remove the Seat and Oil Fill Cap
Remove the Rebel 300 seat. Under the seat area, locate the oil fill cap with integrated dipstick. Remove the cap to allow oil to drain freely.
Step 4: Position the Drain Pan
Place a 2-quart minimum oil drain pan beneath the drain plug at the bottom of the engine.
Step 5: Remove the Drain Plug
Using a 12mm hex socket, loosen the drain plug counterclockwise. Remove the final turns by hand, ready for oil flow.
Warning: Oil may be warm. Wear gloves and eye protection.
Step 6: Drain All the Oil
Allow complete drainage — approximately 8-10 minutes for the smaller 286cc engine. Inspect the oil for unusual debris.
Step 7: Replace the Sealing Washer
Remove the old aluminum washer from the drain plug and replace with a new Honda 90471-PCP-000 or equivalent. Never reuse — these crush washers are single-use.
Step 8: Reinstall the Drain Plug
Clean the plug and seating area. Hand-tighten with the new washer, then torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs) using a torque wrench.
Do NOT over-torque. The aluminum crankcase is vulnerable to thread damage.
Step 9: Remove the Old Oil Filter
Find the spin-on oil filter on the engine. Catch residual oil with rags. Loosen with a filter wrench, then unscrew by hand. Check that the old gasket came off with the filter.
Step 10: Prepare the New Filter
- Rub clean 10W-30 motorcycle oil onto the new filter rubber gasket
- Confirm the old filter gasket was fully removed
- Do NOT pre-fill — the filter is angled and will spill
Step 11: Install the New Filter
Thread by hand until the gasket contacts the mounting surface. Tighten an additional 3/4 to 1 full turn by hand.
Hand-tighten only.
Step 12: Add New Oil
Pour approximately 1.4 quarts (1.3 liters) of SAE 10W-30 motorcycle oil into the fill port. Use Pro Honda GN4/HP4 10W-30 or equivalent API SG+ oil with JASO MA rating.
Note: The Rebel 300 is a small single-cylinder engine. Use 10W-30, NOT 20W-50, and ensure the oil is JASO MA certified for the wet clutch.
Step 13: Verify the Oil Level
- Screwing the fill cap in, start the engine and idle for 2-3 minutes
- Shut off and wait 2-3 minutes
- Remove the seat, remove the dipstick, wipe clean, and re-seat WITHOUT screwing down
- Check between upper and lower marks
- Top up in small amounts if needed
- Tighten the fill cap and reinstall the seat
Step 14: Final Checks
- Check for leaks at drain plug and filter
- Wipe any spills
- Dispose of oil and filter properly
- Record maintenance
Tips, Warnings and Common Mistakes
Helpful Tips
- Small engine, less oil: The Rebel 300 uses only 1.6 quarts with filter — do NOT overfill.
- Same filter as bigger Rebels: Shared Honda 15410-ML7-004 / HF204 filter simplifies multi-bike maintenance.
- Check often: Small single-cylinder engines can consume oil under sustained high RPM. Check dipstick regularly.
Warnings
- NEVER use car oil — wet clutch will slip with automotive friction modifiers.
- Do NOT over-torque — aluminum crankcase threads are easily damaged at 25 Nm maximum.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
| Mistake | Consequence | How to Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Overfilling with too much oil | Foaming, reduced lubrication efficiency | Add gradually and check dipstick frequently |
| Using 20W-50 oil | Poor startup lubrication, wrong viscosity | Use 10W-30 |
| Using car oil | Clutch slippage | JASO MA required |
| Checking oil with dipstick screwed in | Inaccurate reading | Check with cap seated only |
| Over-torquing drain plug | Stripped crankcase | Exactly 25 Nm |
| Reusing sealing washer | Oil leak | Replace every time |
Oil Disposal
- Transfer oil to a sealed container
- Drop off at AutoZone, O'Reilly, Advance Auto, or NAPA (all free)
- Include old filter
- Never pour down drain or mix with other fluids
