Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Warm the Engine

Start the NT1100 and let it idle for 3-5 minutes to warm the oil. The 1084cc Africa Twin-derived parallel-twin warms up reasonably quickly. Warm oil drains more completely and carries suspended contaminants out of the engine better. Park the bike on a level surface. Always perform the oil change with the bike upright, not on the side stand, to ensure complete drainage and accurate oil level measurement.

Step 2: Position the Bike

The NT1100 does not come with a factory center stand. Place the bike on a rear paddock stand or have a helper hold it perfectly upright. The bike must be vertical for an accurate oil level check with the dipstick. If you lack a paddock stand, a sturdy box or milk crate under each side of the rear wheel can approximate the correct height — but ensure the bike is perfectly level.

Step 3: Access the Oil Fill Cap/Dipstick

The oil fill cap with integrated dipstick is located on the top of the engine, accessible from above. Unlatch and remove the oil fill cap. This allows air into the oil system for complete drainage.

Step 4: Remove Lower Fairing Panels (If Necessary)

On the NT1100, the oil filter is located on the left side of the engine, partially tucked behind the lower left fairing. Depending on your setup, you may need to remove the lower left fairing panel to gain comfortable access. Remove the Phillips head screws and 8mm/10mm bolts securing the panel. Set hardware aside in a labeled container for reassembly. Take a photo before disassembly to remember fastener locations.

Step 5: Position the Drain Pan

Place a minimum 5-quart oil drain pan beneath the drain plug. The drain plug is on the bottom of the engine crankcase. The 1084cc engine holds nearly 4 quarts — ensure your pan has adequate capacity.

Step 6: Remove the Drain Plug

Using a 12mm hex socket, loosen the drain plug counterclockwise. Remove the final turns by hand — be ready for oil to flow immediately.

Warning: Oil may be warm. Wear gloves and eye protection.

Step 7: Drain the Oil Fully

Allow all oil to drain completely — approximately 10-15 minutes. The 1084cc engine holds approximately 3.7 liters with filter. Inspect the drained oil for unusual metallic debris. A small amount of fine dark particles is normal, but visible metallic flakes or chunks should be reviewed by a Honda service center.

Step 8: Replace the Drain Plug Sealing Washer

Remove the old aluminum sealing washer from the drain plug. Replace it with a new Honda 94109-12000 sealing washer or equivalent. Do NOT reuse the old washer — these aluminum crush washers deform during installation and will leak if reused.

Step 9: Reinstall the Drain Plug

Clean the drain plug threads and its seating area on the crankcase. Install with the new washer and hand-tighten. Using your torque wrench, tighten to 30 Nm (22 ft-lbs).

Do NOT over-torque. The NT1100 crankcase is aluminum. Over-torquing strips the threads and requires expensive repair.

Step 10: Remove the Old Oil Filter

Locate the spin-on oil filter on the left side of the engine, partially behind the lower fairing. Position a rag or small catch pan below the filter to catch drips. Use a spin-on filter wrench to loosen, then unscrew by hand. Tip the filter opening downward as you remove it to minimize drips. Verify the old rubber gasket came off with the filter.

Step 11: Prepare and Install the New Filter

Before installing: 1. Apply a thin film of clean 10W-30 motorcycle oil to the rubber gasket on the new filter 2. Inspect the filter mounting surface on the engine to confirm the old gasket was fully removed 3. Wipe clean the filter mounting face on the engine block 4. Do NOT pre-fill the filter — the filter mounting angle means pre-filled oil would spill during installation

Screw the new filter on by hand. When the gasket contacts the mounting surface, tighten an additional 3/4 turn by hand.

Hand-tighten only. No filter wrench for installation. Over-tightening makes future removal very difficult.

Step 12: Add New Oil

Using a funnel, pour approximately 3.5 quarts (3.3 liters) of SAE 10W-30 motorcycle oil into the oil fill port. For DCT models, the fill is approximately 4.0 quarts (3.8 liters) with filter. Start with the lower amount — you can always add more.

Critical: Use 10W-30 engine oil meeting API SG or higher AND JASO MA (for wet clutch compatibility). Pro Honda GN4 10W-30 is the OEM recommendation. Do NOT use 20W-50 Harley oil. Do NOT use automotive oils with friction modifiers.

Step 13: Reassemble Body Panels

If you removed lower fairing panels for filter access, reinstall them now. Ensure all fasteners are properly seated. A loose panel rattles at highway speeds and may detach.

Step 14: Verify the Oil Level

  1. Reinstall the oil fill cap (dipstick) and tighten it securely
  2. Start the engine and let it idle for 2-3 minutes — this circulates new oil through the filter
  3. Shut off the engine and wait 2-3 minutes for oil to return to the sump
  4. With the bike held upright, unscrew the dipstick, and check the oil level — do NOT screw the dipstick in when checking
  5. The oil level should be between the upper and lower marks on the dipstick
  6. If low, add oil in 1/4 cup (60ml) increments, re-seat the cap, and recheck
  7. Once correct, tighten the fill cap securely

Step 15: Final Checks

Tips, Warnings and Common Mistakes

Helpful Tips

Warnings

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake Consequence How to Avoid
Using automotive oil with friction modifiers Wet clutch slippage and damage Verify JASO MA or MA2 on oil label
Over-torquing drain plug Stripped aluminum crankcase threads Torque to exactly 30 Nm (22 ft-lbs)
Reusing aluminum sealing washer Oil leak while riding Always replace with new washer
Checking oil with dipstick screwed in Inaccurate reading — overfilling Seat cap on threads only, do not screw down
Oil change on side stand Incomplete drainage and inaccurate level Bike must be upright and perfectly level
Double-gasketing the oil filter Major oil leak from filter base Verify old gasket fully removed
Loose fairing bolts after reassembly Rattling or detached panels at speed Keep labeled bag of fasteners

Oil Disposal

Used motor oil is hazardous waste. Never pour it down a drain, into the trash, or on the ground.

  1. Pour the drained oil into a clean, sealable container (empty oil bottles work well)
  2. Take it to a certified recycling center. Most major auto parts stores accept used oil at no charge: - AutoZone — free oil recycling, all locations - O'Reilly Auto Parts — free oil and filter recycling - Advance Auto Parts — free oil recycling - NAPA Auto Parts — most locations accept oil, call ahead
  3. Bring the old oil filter — these stores typically recycle filters as well
  4. Your local municipal recycling center or household hazardous waste program also accepts used oil
  5. Never mix used oil with other fluids (antifreeze, brake fluid, transmission fluid) — this prevents recycling
