Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Warm the Engine

Start the Gold Wing and let it idle for 5-10 minutes. The flat-six engine has a large oil capacity and benefits from thorough warming — this helps old oil drain completely. Park the motorcycle on a level surface, center stand if equipped, or a rear stand.

Step 2: Access the Service Area

The Gold Wing engine is partially covered by fairings and bodywork. You may need to remove or work around lower fairing panels to access the drain plug and oil filter areas. Consult your owner's manual for specific panel removal if needed. Many Gold Wing owners have aftermarket service covers for easier access.

Step 3: Remove the Oil Fill Cap

Locate the oil fill port on the right side of the engine (top area). Remove the oil fill cap/dipstick. On the Gold Wing, the fill cap is accessible from the right side near the passenger footpeg area. This allows air into the system for complete draining.

Step 4: Position the Drain Pan

Place a 6-quart minimum drain pan beneath the drain plug. The Gold Wing uses over 4 quarts of oil — ensure the pan has sufficient capacity. You may need to position the pan carefully due to the wide engine profile and lower body panels.

Step 5: Remove the Drain Plug

Using a 12mm hex socket on an extension (a 3-inch or 6-inch extension helps reach around the lower fairing), loosen the drain plug counterclockwise. Remove by hand, ready for oil flow.

Warning: Oil may be warm. Wear gloves and eye protection.

Step 6: Drain the Oil Fully

Allow complete drainage — approximately 10-15 minutes. The large flat-six holds more oil than most motorcycles, so let it drain thoroughly. Inspect the drained oil for unusual debris.

Step 7: Replace the Sealing Washer

Remove the old aluminum sealing washer from the drain plug. Replace with a new Honda 90471-PCP-000 or equivalent. Do NOT reuse — this washer is designed to crush once for a proper seal.

Step 8: Reinstall the Drain Plug

Clean the drain plug and its seating area. Install with the new washer, hand-tighten, then torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Do NOT over-torque. The aluminum crankcase can be damaged. Use a torque wrench.

Step 9: Remove the Old Oil Filter

The Gold Wing oil filter is typically located on the left side of the engine, accessible near the lower fairing. Catch residual oil with rags. Use a spin-on filter wrench to loosen, then unscrew by hand. Check that the old gasket was removed with the filter.

Step 10: Prepare the New Oil Filter

Before installing: 1. Apply a thin coating of clean 10W-30 motorcycle oil to the rubber gasket on the new filter 2. Inspect the filter mounting surface — confirm the old gasket is fully removed 3. Do NOT pre-fill this filter — it is mounted on an angle and will spill during installation

Step 11: Install the New Oil Filter

Thread the new filter on by hand. When the gasket contacts the seat, tighten an additional 3/4 turn by hand.

Hand-tighten only. No wrench for installation.

Step 12: Add New Oil

Using a funnel, pour approximately 3.9 quarts (3.7 liters) of SAE 10W-30 motorcycle oil into the fill port. Use Pro Honda GN4/HP4 10W-30 or equivalent API SG+ rated oil with JASO MA certification.

Critical: The Gold Wing's flat-six engine requires 10W-30 motorcycle oil. Do NOT use 20W-50. Do NOT use automotive oils — the integrated wet clutch requires JASO MA specifications.

Step 13: Verify the Oil Level

  1. Reinstall and tighten the oil fill cap/dipstick
  2. Start the engine and idle for 2-3 minutes to circulate oil through the new filter
  3. Shut off the engine and wait 3-5 minutes — the larger flat-six engine holds significant oil in passages
  4. Remove the fill cap, wipe the dipstick clean
  5. Reinsert the dipstick WITHOUT screwing it in, then remove and check the level
  6. The oil should be between the upper and lower level marks
  7. Add oil in small amounts (1/4 cup at a time) if needed, rechecking between additions
  8. When correct, tighten the fill cap securely

Step 14: Final Checks

Tips, Warnings and Common Mistakes

Helpful Tips

Warnings

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake Consequence How to Avoid
Using car (automotive) oil Clutch slippage, transmission wear JASO MA only
Using 20W-50 oil Poor cold-start lubrication for flat-six Use 10W-30 as Honda specifies
Over-torquing drain plug Stripped aluminum crankcase threads Torque to exactly 25 Nm
Checking oil with bike on side stand Inaccurate flat reading Center stand or rear stand only
Checking with dipstick screwed in False reading, risk of overfilling Check with dipstick seated only
Reusing aluminum sealing washer Oil leak during long rides Replace every oil change
Double-gasketing the filter Major oil leak Confirm old gasket removed

Oil Disposal

Never pour used oil down drains, into trash, or on the ground.

  1. Transfer used oil to a sealed container
  2. Drop off at: - AutoZone — free recycling - O'Reilly Auto Parts — free oil and filter recycling - Advance Auto Parts — free oil recycling - NAPA Auto Parts — check local availability
  3. Include the old oil filter
  4. Municipal recycling and hazardous waste centers also accept oil
  5. Never mix with other automotive fluids
