Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Warm the Engine

Start the Fury and let it idle for 3-5 minutes to warm the oil. The 1312cc liquid-cooled V-twin warms up relatively quickly. Warm oil drains more completely and carries suspended debris out of the engine better. Park the bike on a level surface.

Tip: Do not rev the engine during warm-up — a steady idle is sufficient to circulate and warm the oil.

Step 2: Position the Bike

Ideally, the Fury should be on a rear paddock stand to keep it perfectly vertical. The bike's low-slung chopper stance brings the drain plug very close to the ground, making the paddock stand especially useful for clearance. If you do not have one, have a helper hold the bike upright or use the side stand with caution. The bike must be level for accurate oil level measurement.

Warning: The Fury's long wheelbase and low frame make it harder to slide underneath comfortably. A creeper pad or foam mat is highly recommended for this bike specifically.

Step 3: Remove the Oil Fill Cap

On the Fury, the oil fill cap/dipstick is located on the top of the engine, near the front cylinder head. Unscrew the oil fill cap. This allows air into the crankcase for a complete and efficient drain.

Step 4: Position the Drain Pan

Place a minimum 4-quart capacity oil drain pan beneath the drain plug. Due to the Fury's low chassis geometry, position the pan as close to vertical beneath the plug as possible. You may need a low-profile pan or to tilt the pan slightly to fit.

Tip: Because the Fury sits so low, angle your drain pan so its open rim faces the drain plug rather than sitting flat on the ground.

Step 5: Remove the Drain Plug

Using a 12mm hex socket, loosen the drain plug counterclockwise. Remove the final turns by hand — be ready for oil to flow immediately.

Warning: Oil may be warm. Wear gloves and eye protection.

Step 6: Drain the Oil Fully

Allow all oil to drain completely — approximately 10-15 minutes. Inspect the drain plug and the oil for any unusual metallic debris. A small amount of fine particles is normal, but visible chunks or excessive metallic material should be reviewed by a service center.

Step 7: Replace the Drain Plug Sealing Washer

Remove the old aluminum sealing washer from the drain plug. Replace it with a new Honda 90471-MEE-000 sealing washer (or equivalent 12mm aluminum crush washer). Do NOT reuse the old washer — these aluminum crush washers deform on installation and will leak if reused.

Step 8: Reinstall the Drain Plug

Clean the drain plug threads and its seating area. Install with the new washer and hand-tighten. Using your torque wrench, tighten to 30 Nm (22 ft-lbs).

Do NOT over-torque. The Fury crankcase is aluminum. Over-torquing strips the threads and requires expensive repair or case replacement.

Step 9: Remove the Old Oil Filter

Locate the spin-on oil filter on the right side of the engine, near the V-twin valley area. Position a rag or small catch pan below the filter to catch drips. Use a spin-on filter wrench to loosen, then unscrew by hand. Verify the old rubber gasket came off with the filter.

Tip: The filter area is close to hot exhaust pipes. Allow the engine to cool for 2-3 minutes after draining before reaching for the filter.

Step 10: Prepare the New Filter

Before installing: 1. Apply a thin film of clean 10W-30 motorcycle oil to the rubber gasket on the new filter 2. Inspect the filter mounting surface on the engine to confirm the old gasket was fully removed 3. Do NOT pre-fill the filter — it is mounted at an angle and pre-filling will spill during installation

Step 11: Install the New Oil Filter

Screw the new filter on by hand. When the gasket contacts the mounting surface, tighten an additional 3/4 turn by hand.

Hand-tighten only. No filter wrench for installation. Over-torquing will distort the gasket and cause leaks.

Step 12: Add New Oil

Using a funnel, pour approximately 3.0 quarts (2.8 liters) of SAE 10W-30 motorcycle oil into the oil fill port.

Critical: Use 10W-30 engine oil meeting API SG or higher AND JASO MA (for wet clutch compatibility). Do NOT use 20W-50 Harley oil. Do NOT use automotive oils with friction modifiers.

Step 13: Verify the Oil Level

  1. Reinstall the oil fill cap (dipstick) and screw it in securely
  2. Start the engine and let it idle for 2-3 minutes to circulate oil through the new filter
  3. Shut off the engine and wait 2-3 minutes for oil to return to the sump
  4. Check the oil level using the sight glass on the right side of the crankcase — the bike MUST be upright and level
  5. The oil level should be between the upper and lower level marks on the sight glass
  6. If below the lower mark, add oil in small amounts (1/4 cup increments) and recheck
  7. Once the level is correct, ensure the fill cap is securely tightened

Warning: Checking oil with the bike on the side stand will give a false reading. The Fury must be perfectly upright on level ground with the sight glass at eye level.

Step 14: Final Checks

Tips, Warnings and Common Mistakes

Helpful Tips

Warnings

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake Consequence How to Avoid
Using 20W-50 Harley oil Wrong viscosity for Honda liquid-cooled V-twin Use 10W-30 for Honda engines
Using car (automotive) oil Wet-clutch slippage Verify JASO MA or MA2 on label
Over-torquing drain plug Stripped aluminum crankcase threads Torque to 30 Nm (22 ft-lbs) exactly
Reusing aluminum sealing washer Oil leak during riding Always replace with new washer
Checking oil on side stand Inaccurate reading — overfilling or underfilling Must check upright and level with sight glass
Double-gasketing the oil filter Major oil leak from filter base Verify old gasket removed with old filter
Using a flat drain pan (too tall) Won't fit under low Fury frame Use a low-profile pan or angle a standard pan

Oil Disposal

Used motor oil is hazardous waste. Never pour it down a drain, into the trash, or on the ground.

  1. Pour the drained oil into a clean, sealable container (empty oil bottles work well)
  2. Take it to a certified recycling center. Most major auto parts stores accept used oil at no charge: - AutoZone — free oil recycling, all locations - O'Reilly Auto Parts — free oil and filter recycling - Advance Auto Parts — free oil recycling - NAPA Auto Parts — most locations accept oil, call ahead
  3. Bring the old oil filter — these stores typically recycle filters as well
  4. Your local municipal recycling center or household hazardous waste program also accepts used oil
  5. Never mix used oil with other fluids (antifreeze, brake fluid, gasoline) — this prevents recycling
