Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Warm the Engine
Start the Sport Glide and run for 5-10 minutes to warm the oil. The M-114 Softail engine warms oil in the frame-mounted tank thoroughly. Park on level ground and let sit for 5 minutes.
Step 2: Position and Elevate the Bike
Place the Sport Glide on a motorcycle jack or lift. The Softail chassis has a frame-mounted oil tank, so ensure the bike is level for accurate drainage and oil level measurement. Use jack stands — never rely on a hydraulic jack alone.
Step 3: Remove the Oil Fill Cap
Locate and remove the oil fill cap/dipstick from the Softail frame-mounted oil tank. On the Sport Glide, access may be partially obstructed by the factory fairing and saddlebags (which are removable). Remove them if necessary for better access.
Step 4: Position the Drain Pan
Place a minimum 6-quart drain pan beneath the drain plug on the bottom of the frame-mounted oil tank.
Step 5: Remove the Drain Plug
Using a 3/8 inch hex wrench, loosen the drain plug counterclockwise. Remove by hand — be ready for warm oil flow.
Warning: Oil may be warm. Wear gloves and eye protection.
Step 6: Drain the Oil Fully
Allow all oil to drain — approximately 10-15 minutes. Inspect the drain plug and oil for unusual debris.
Step 7: Replace the Drain Plug Washer
Remove the old copper crush washer. Replace with a new one. Do NOT reuse — single-use only.
Step 8: Reinstall the Drain Plug
Clean the threads and seating area. Install with new washer, hand-tighten, then torque to 14-18 ft-lbs.
Do NOT over-torque. The Softail frame oil tank threads are expensive to repair.
Step 9: Remove the Old Oil Filter
Locate the oil filter on the frame-mounted oil tank (typically lower side). Use a filter wrench to loosen, then remove by hand. Verify the old gasket came off with the filter.
Step 10: Prepare the New Filter
- Apply clean 20W-50 motorcycle oil to the new filter gasket
- Confirm old gasket was fully removed from the mounting surface
- Do NOT pre-fill — mounts from the side/below and will spill
Step 11: Install the New Oil Filter
Thread by hand. When gasket contacts seat, tighten an additional 3/4 turn by hand.
Hand-tighten only.
Step 12: Add New Oil
Pour approximately 3.5 quarts of SAE 20W-50 motorcycle oil into the fill port. Use H-D Formula+ or equivalent API SG+ rated oil with JASO MA/MA2.
Step 13: Verify the Oil Level
- Rest fill cap on threads without tightening
- Start engine, idle 2-3 minutes
- Shut off, wait 1-2 minutes
- Check dipstick (bike level) — between Add and Full marks
- Add in 1/4 cup increments if needed
- Tighten fill cap when correct
Step 14: Final Checks
- Check for leaks at drain plug and filter
- Wipe any spilled oil from frame, engine, or factory fairing
- Reset the Sport Glide digital maintenance reminder if equipped
- Dispose of used oil properly (see below)
Tips, Warnings and Common Mistakes
Helpful Tips
- Sport Glide versatility: This is a touring-capable Softail with removable fairing and saddlebags. Remove them if they obstruct oil change access.
- Oil recommendation: H-D Formula+ is OEM spec. Alternatives: Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W-50, Amsoil V-Twin Synthetic 20W-50.
- Frame oil tank: Unlike Touring models with separate tanks, the Softail oil is held within the frame tubes. This makes proper oil level checking critical — you are literally checking the frame structure.
Warnings
- NEVER use automotive oils with friction modifiers — clutch slippage results.
- Do NOT over-torque the drain plug — the Softail frame-mounted oil tank threads are not easily repaired.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
| Mistake | Consequence | How to Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Over-torquing drain plug | Stripped frame oil tank threads | 14-18 ft-lbs with torque wrench |
| Reusing crush washer | Oil leak | Replace every change |
| Using car oil | Clutch slippage | JASO MA/MA2 required |
| Not checking level after fill | Engine damage | Start, wait, recheck dipstick |
| Double-gasketing filter | Oil leak | Verify old gasket removed |
Oil Disposal
- Seal used oil in a clean container
- Drop at AutoZone, O'Reilly, Advance Auto, NAPA (all free)
- Include old filter
- Municipal recycling also accepts
- Never mix with other fluids
