Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Warm the Engine
Start your Nightster and let it run for 5-10 minutes to warm the oil. The Revolution Max 975T is liquid-cooled, so the engine warms quickly. Warm oil drains more completely and carries suspended particles better. Park on a level surface and let the engine sit for 5 minutes so oil settles in the sump.
Step 2: Position and Elevate the Bike
Place the Nightster on a motorcycle jack or lift. The Nightster has a moderate seat height and sporty riding position. Always use jack stands for safety — never rely solely on a single hydraulic jack.
Step 3: Remove the Oil Fill Cap
Locate and remove the oil fill cap/dipstick. On the Nightster, the oil fill is typically accessible from the side of the crankcase area. Removing the cap allows air in so oil drains freely and completely.
Note: The Revolution Max 975T is a liquid-cooled engine. Do NOT confuse the coolant reservoir with the oil fill — they are completely separate systems.
Step 4: Position the Drain Pan
Place a minimum 6-quart oil drain pan beneath the drain plug on the bottom of the crankcase/oil pan.
Step 5: Remove the Drain Plug
Using a 1/4 inch (6mm) Allen/hex wrench, loosen the drain plug counterclockwise. The Revolution Max uses smaller-threaded aluminum fasteners compared to Milwaukee-Eight engines. Finish removing by hand and be ready for oil flow.
Warning: Oil and engine surfaces may be warm. Wear gloves and eye protection. Important: The Nightster drain plug threads into aluminum. Be gentle and NEVER force or over-torque.
Step 6: Drain the Oil Fully
Allow all oil to drain completely — approximately 10-15 minutes. Inspect the drain plug for damage and the oil for unusual metallic debris. Fine particles are normal on a newer engine, but chunks or excessive debris require attention.
Step 7: Replace the Drain Plug Washer
Remove the old aluminum crush washer and replace with a new one. Do NOT reuse aluminum crush washers — they deform once and will leak if reinstalled.
Step 8: Reinstall the Drain Plug
Clean the drain plug threads carefully. Install with the new washer and hand-tighten. Then use your torque wrench to tighten to 14 ft-lbs only.
CRITICAL: The Revolution Max 975T has an aluminum oil pan. Overtightening will strip the threads. Use exactly 14 ft-lbs — do NOT guess.
Step 9: Remove the Old Oil Filter
Locate the oil filter on the lower portion of the engine. Position the drain pan below. Use an oil filter wrench to loosen, then spin off by hand. Check that the old rubber gasket came off with the filter.
Step 10: Prepare the New Filter
Before installing: 1. Apply a thin film of clean 10W-40 synthetic motorcycle oil to the rubber gasket of the new filter 2. Carefully inspect the mounting surface to confirm the old gasket was removed 3. Do NOT pre-fill this filter — it is mounted from below/side and will spill
Step 11: Install the New Oil Filter
Thread the new filter on by hand. When the gasket contacts the mounting surface, tighten an additional 3/4 turn by hand.
Hand-tighten only. No tools.
Step 12: Add New Oil
Pour approximately 2.5 quarts of SAE 10W-40 synthetic motorcycle oil through a funnel into the fill port. Use Harley-Davidson Formula+ Synthetic 10W-40 or equivalent oil that meets H-D specifications and is JASO MA or MA2 rated.
Important: The Revolution Max 975T uses 10W-40 synthetic, NOT 20W-50. Do not use Milwaukee-Eight oil specs on the Nightster — they are completely different engines.
Step 13: Verify the Oil Level
- Rest the fill cap/dipstick on the threads without tightening
- Start the engine and idle for 2-3 minutes to circulate oil through the new filter
- Shut off the engine and wait 1-2 minutes for oil to settle
- Check the dipstick — oil should be between the Add and Full marks
- Add oil in small amounts (1/4 cup at a time) if needed, rechecking after each addition
- Tighten the fill cap securely when the level is in range
Step 14: Final Checks
- Inspect around the drain plug for leaks
- Inspect around the oil filter for leaks
- Wipe down any oil spills from the engine or frame
- Check coolant level as a bonus (liquid-cooled engine — good opportunity)
- Reset the maintenance reminder on the Nightster digital display if equipped
- Dispose of used oil properly (see below)
Tips, Warnings and Common Mistakes
Helpful Tips
- Oil specification: The Revolution Max 975T requires 10W-40 synthetic, NOT the 20W-50 used on Milwaukee-Eight engines. This is a critical difference.
- Coolant check: Since the Nightster is liquid-cooled, this is a good opportunity to check the coolant level and condition.
- Filter compatibility: The Nightster shares the same oil filter (63731-99A) as Milwaukee-Eight models, making filter sourcing easy.
- Keep records: Log date, mileage, oil brand, and filter used for warranty and tracking.
Warnings
- NEVER use 20W-50 on the Nightster — the Revolution Max 975T requires 10W-40 synthetic. Using Milwaukee-Eight oil specs can cause engine damage.
- NEVER over-torque the drain plug — the aluminum oil pan on the Revolution Max is especially vulnerable to thread damage. Use exactly 14 ft-lbs.
- Do NOT confuse coolant and oil fill ports — the Nightster has separate systems.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
| Mistake | Consequence | How to Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Using 20W-50 instead of 10W-40 | Engine damage, poor lubrication | Revolution Max needs 10W-40 synthetic specifically |
| Over-torquing on aluminum threads | Stripped oil pan, costly engine repair | Torque to exactly 14 ft-lbs, no more |
| Using automotive oil | Clutch slippage | Verify JASO MA/MA2 rating |
| Not checking oil level after fill | Engine damage from incorrect level | Start engine, wait, recheck dipstick |
| Double-gasketing the filter | Major oil leak | Verify old gasket came off with old filter |
| Skipping fill cap removal | Incomplete oil drain | Always remove fill cap before draining |
Oil Disposal
Never pour used motor oil down a drain, into the trash, or onto the ground. It is hazardous waste.
- Transfer used oil into a clean, sealable container (empty oil jugs are ideal)
- Take to a certified recycling center. Major auto parts stores that accept oil for free: - AutoZone — free oil recycling at all U.S. locations - O'Reilly Auto Parts — free oil and filter recycling - Advance Auto Parts — free oil recycling - NAPA Auto Parts — most locations accept oil, call to verify
- Bring your old oil filter — these stores recycle filters as well
- Your local municipal recycling or hazardous waste facility also accepts used oil
- Never mix oil with other fluids (coolant, brake fluid, etc.) — this prevents recycling
