Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Warm the Engine
Start the Forty-Eight and let it idle for 5-10 minutes. The air-cooled Evolution 1200 engine warms up quickly. Warm oil drains more completely. Park on a level surface and shut off the engine.
Step 2: Position the Bike Upright
The Forty-Eight has a very low seat height (26.0 inches) and a peanut tank with a narrow stance. Keep the bike upright and level — do NOT perform an oil change on the side stand. Use a rear stand or have a helper hold the bike vertical.
Step 3: Remove the Oil Fill Cap
Locate the oil fill port on the left side of the Sportster oil tank (mounted under the seat area). Remove the fill cap to allow air into the oiling system for complete drainage. On the Forty-Eight, access is typically clear but may require removing the seat.
Step 4: Position the Drain Pan
Place a minimum 4-quart oil drain pan beneath the drain plug on the bottom of the Evolution engine crankcase.
Step 5: Remove the Drain Plug
Using a 3/8 inch hex wrench, loosen the drain plug counterclockwise. Remove the final turns by hand — be ready for oil flow.
Warning: Oil may be warm. Wear gloves and eye protection.
Step 6: Drain the Oil Completely
Allow all oil to drain — approximately 10-15 minutes. Inspect the drain plug and oil for unusual debris. The Evolution 1200 is a durable, proven engine — fine particles are normal, but excessive metallic debris requires dealer attention.
Step 7: Replace the Drain Plug Washer
Remove the old crush washer and replace with a new copper or aluminum washer. Do NOT reuse — these are single-use sealing components.
Step 8: Reinstall the Drain Plug
Clean the drain plug threads and seating area. Install with the new washer, hand-tighten, then torque to 14-18 ft-lbs.
Do NOT over-torque. The Evolution crankcase has aluminum threads. Stripping them is an expensive repair.
Step 9: Remove the Old Oil Filter
The Forty-Eight oil filter is a spin-on can located on the right side of the Evolution engine, near the bottom. Position catch rags below. Use a spin-on filter wrench to loosen, then unscrew by hand. Check that the old rubber gasket came off with the filter.
Step 10: Prepare the New Filter
Before installing: 1. Apply a thin film of clean 20W-50 motorcycle oil to the rubber gasket on the new filter 2. Inspect the engine mounting surface — confirm the old gasket was fully removed 3. Do NOT pre-fill — the filter is angled and will spill during installation
Step 11: Install the New Oil Filter
Thread the new filter on by hand. When the gasket contacts the seat, tighten an additional 3/4 turn by hand.
Hand-tighten only. No wrench for installation.
Step 12: Add New Oil
Using a funnel, pour approximately 2.5 quarts of SAE 20W-50 motorcycle oil into the fill port. Use H-D Formula+ or equivalent API SG+ rated oil with JASO MA/MA2 certification.
Note: The Evolution 1200 uses 20W-50 — the same as Milwaukee-Eight models. This is different from Revolution Max engines which use 10W-40.
Step 13: Verify the Oil Level
- Rest the fill cap on the oil tank without tightening
- Start the engine and idle for 2-3 minutes
- Shut off and wait 1-2 minutes for oil to settle
- Check the dipstick — oil should be between the Add and Full marks
- Add oil in small amounts if needed, rechecking between additions
- Tighten the fill cap securely when the level is correct
Step 14: Final Checks
- Inspect for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter
- Wipe any spilled oil from the engine, frame, or peanut fuel tank
- Dispose of used oil and filter properly (see below)
- Record this service in your Forty-Eight maintenance log
Tips, Warnings and Common Mistakes
Helpful Tips
- Evolution engine reliability: The 1200 Evolution is one of the most proven Sportster engines ever built. Proper maintenance keeps them running for well over 100,000 miles.
- Oil recommendation: H-D Formula+ semi-synthetic is excellent for the Evolution 1200. Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W-50 and Amsoil V-Twin Synthetic are great alternatives.
- Peanut tank styling: The Forty-Eight signature peanut tank makes this bike unmistakable. Take care not to drip oil on the fuel tank finish during the oil change.
- Keep records: Sportster maintenance documentation is important for resale value.
Warnings
- NEVER use automotive oils with friction modifiers — the Sportster uses a wet clutch and will slip with car oils.
- Do NOT over-torque the drain plug — the aluminum Evolution crankcase is damaged easily by overtightening.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
| Mistake | Consequence | How to Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Using car oil | Clutch slippage | JASO MA/MA2 required |
| Over-torquing drain plug | Stripped crankcase threads | 14-18 ft-lbs with torque wrench |
| Reusing drain washer | Oil leak | Replace every change |
| Not checking oil level after fill | Running with low oil | Start engine, wait, recheck |
| Double-gasketing the filter | Major oil leak | Verify old gasket removed |
| Performing on side stand | Inaccurate oil level | Bike must be upright and level |
Oil Disposal
Never pour used motor oil down a drain, into trash, or on the ground.
- Pour into a clean sealed container
- Drop off at AutoZone, O'Reilly, Advance Auto Parts, or NAPA (all free)
- Include the old oil filter
- Municipal recycling and hazardous waste facilities also accept
- Never mix with other fluids
