Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Warm the Engine

Run your bike for 5-10 minutes to warm the oil. Warm oil flows more completely and carries suspended contaminants. Do NOT change oil on a stone-cold engine. Park on a level surface and let the engine sit for 5 minutes so oil drains back into the tank.

Step 2: Position the Bike

Place the motorcycle on a jack or lift so it's level and you have good access to the underside of the engine. Use jack stands for safety. Do NOT rely solely on a hydraulic jack.

Step 3: Remove the Oil Fill Cap

Remove the oil fill cap/dipstick from the top of the oil tank. This allows air in so the oil can drain freely. On most Harley-Davidson models, the oil fill cap is accessible from the right side (check your specific model for exact location).

Step 4: Remove the Drain Plug

Place your oil drain pan beneath the engine. Locate the drain plug on the bottom of the oil tank/frame. Using a 3/8" Allen/hex wrench, loosen the drain plug by turning counterclockwise. Finish loosening by hand — be ready for hot oil.

Warning: Oil may be hot. Wear gloves and eye protection.

Step 5: Drain the Oil

Allow all oil to drain completely. This takes 5-10 minutes. Inspect the drain plug and washer for burrs, damage, or metal shavings. Small metal flakes in the oil can be normal during break-in on a new motorcycle, but excessive metallic debris warrants a dealer visit.

Step 6: Replace the Drain Plug Washer

Remove the old crush washer from the drain plug and replace it with a new one. Never reuse crush washers — they deform to create a seal and reusing them causes leaks.

Step 7: Reinstall the Drain Plug

Clean the drain plug threads, install with the new washer, and hand-tighten. Then use your torque wrench to tighten to 14-18 ft-lbs.

Do NOT over-torque. Overtightening strips the threads in the oil tank, which is an expensive repair.

Step 8: Remove the Old Oil Filter

The oil filter is located on the bottom of the oil tank. Place the drain pan beneath the filter. Use an oil filter wrench (cap-style or strap type) to loosen the filter. If stubborn, break the seal with the wrench, then spin it off by hand. Allow remaining oil to drain from the filter mount.

Step 9: Prepare the New Filter

Before installing the new filter: 1. Apply a thin film of clean engine oil to the rubber gasket on the new filter 2. Do NOT pre-fill the filter on a Harley-Davidson — it installs from the bottom and pre-filling will just spill out 3. Verify the old filter's gasket came off with it (a stuck gasket causes double-gasket leaks)

Step 10: Install the New Oil Filter

Screw the new filter onto the mount by hand. When the gasket makes contact, tighten an additional 3/4 turn by hand.

Do NOT use a wrench to tighten the filter. Hand-tighten only.

Step 11: Add New Oil

Pour 3.0 quarts (96 oz) of SAE 20W-50 motorcycle oil (Harley-Davidson Formula+ or equivalent API SG or higher spec oil) through a funnel into the oil fill port. Do NOT use automotive oils with friction modifiers — they damage the clutch.

Step 12: Check the Oil Level

  1. Install the dipstick/fill cap but do NOT screw it in — just rest it on the threads
  2. Start the engine and let it idle for 2-3 minutes
  3. Turn off the engine and wait 1-2 minutes for oil to settle
  4. Check the dipstick — the oil level should be between the marks
  5. If low, add oil in small increments (1/4 cup at a time) until proper level is reached
  6. You will likely need the remaining oil to reach the proper level

Step 13: Final Checks

Tips, Warnings & Common Mistakes

Tips

Warnings

Common Mistakes

Mistake Consequence How to Avoid
Over-torquing drain plug Stripped oil tank threads Use a torque wrench, never guess
Reusing drain plug washer Oil leak Always replace, keep spares
Using car oil instead of motorcycle oil Clutch slippage Verify JASO MA/MA2 rating
Not checking oil level after fill Engine damage Always start engine, wait, recheck
Double-gasketing the oil filter Massive oil leak Check that old gasket came off with old filter
Forgetting to remove fill cap before draining Incomplete oil drain Always remove fill cap first

Oil Disposal

Never pour used motor oil down a drain, into the trash, or on the ground.

  1. Pour the drained oil into a clean container with a tight-fitting lid or cap (use the empty oil jugs)
  2. Take it to a certified recycling center. Most auto parts stores accept used oil for free: - AutoZone — free oil recycling at all locations - O'Reilly Auto Parts — free oil and filter recycling - Advance Auto Parts — free oil recycling - NAPA Auto Parts — varies by location, call ahead
  3. Take the old oil filter with you — most of these stores also recycle filters
  4. You can also take it to your municipal recycling center or hazardous waste facility
  5. Never mix oil with other fluids (antifreeze, brake fluid, etc.) — this makes recycling difficult

Verification Notes for 2026 Model Year

⚠️ The following specs should be verified against the 2026 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide owner's manual:

Spec Known Value Notes
