Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Warm the Engine
Start your CVO Street Glide and let it run for 5-10 minutes. The Milwaukee-Eight 117 with liquid-cooled cylinder heads warms oil thoroughly for complete drainage. Park on a level surface and let sit for 5 minutes so oil drains back to the tank.
Step 2: Position and Elevate the Bike
Place the CVO on a motorcycle jack or lift. Touring models are heavy (over 900 lbs for CVO), so use a rated lift and jack stands. Ensure the bike is perfectly level for accurate oil level measurement.
Step 3: Remove the Oil Fill Cap
Remove the oil fill cap/dipstick from the right side oil tank area. On the CVO Street Glide, the oil tank is accessible under or near the seat area. Removing the cap allows air in for a complete drain.
Step 4: Position the Drain Pan
Place a minimum 6-quart drain pan beneath the drain plug. The M-117 CVO engine holds more oil than standard M-114 models — ensure adequate capacity.
Step 5: Remove the Drain Plug
Using a 3/8 inch hex/Allen wrench, loosen the drain plug counterclockwise. Remove by hand — be ready for warm oil flow.
Warning: Oil may be hot. Wear gloves and eye protection.
Step 6: Drain All the Oil
Allow full drainage — 10-15 minutes. The larger M-117 displacement means more oil to drain. Inspect for unusual debris; fine particles are normal, but excessive metallic material requires evaluation.
Step 7: Replace the Drain Plug Washer
Remove the old copper crush washer and replace with a new one. Never reuse crush washers — they are single-use sealing components.
Step 8: Reinstall the Drain Plug
Clean threads, install with new washer, hand-tighten, then torque to 14-18 ft-lbs.
Do NOT over-torque. The CVO oil tank has the same aluminum threads as standard Touring models — stripping requires expensive repair.
Step 9: Remove the Old Oil Filter
Locate the oil filter on the bottom or side of the oil tank. Position the drain pan beneath. Use a filter wrench to loosen, then spin off by hand. Verify the old rubber gasket came off with the filter.
Step 10: Prepare the New Filter
- Apply a thin film of clean 20W-50 synthetic motorcycle oil to the new filter gasket
- Confirm the old gasket was fully removed
- Do NOT pre-fill — it mounts from below and will spill
Step 11: Install the New Oil Filter
Thread on by hand. When the gasket contacts the seat, tighten an additional 3/4 turn by hand.
Hand-tighten only.
Step 12: Add New Oil
Pour approximately 4.0 quarts of SAE 20W-50 full synthetic motorcycle oil into the fill port. Use Harley-Davidson SYN3 or Formula+ Synthetic 20W-50, or equivalent API SG+ rated oil with JASO MA/MA2 certification.
CVO Note: CVO models benefit from full synthetic oil. H-D SYN3 is the premium OEM recommendation for these high-performance M-117 engines.
Step 13: Verify the Oil Level
- Rest the fill cap on threads without tightening
- Start the engine and idle for 2-3 minutes
- Shut off and wait 1-2 minutes for oil to settle
- Check the dipstick (bike level) — should be between Add and Full marks
- Add oil in 1/4 cup increments if needed, rechecking
- Tighten the fill cap securely when correct
Step 14: Final Checks
- Check for leaks at drain plug and filter
- Wipe any spilled oil from the frame, exhaust, or premium CVO paint/finish
- Reset the CVO digital display maintenance reminder if equipped
- Properly dispose of used oil (see below)
- Record service in your CVO maintenance log
Tips, Warnings and Common Mistakes
Helpful Tips
- Full synthetic recommended: CVO motorcycles are premium models with high-displacement M-117 engines. H-D SYN3 full synthetic provides superior protection, especially in hot Florida climates.
- Frequent oil changes: CVO owners often change oil every 3,000-5,000 miles for maximum engine longevity. The larger 117 engine produces more heat and stress.
- Protect the finish: Premium CVO chrome and custom paint require extra care — keep oil off painted surfaces and chrome during the change.
- Keep records: CVO service history is valuable for resale. Document every maintenance event.
Warnings
- NEVER use automotive oils — friction modifiers cause clutch slippage in Harley wet clutch systems.
- Do NOT over-torque the drain plug — aluminum tank threads are easily damaged.
- Use full synthetic for CVO models — these premium engines perform best with SYN3 or equivalent full synthetic 20W-50.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
| Mistake | Consequence | How to Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Using mineral blend instead of full synthetic | Reduced protection on high-output M-117 | Use SYN3 or Formula+ Synthetic |
| Over-torquing drain plug | Stripped oil tank threads | Torque to 14-18 ft-lbs only |
| Reusing crush washer | Oil leak | Replace every oil change |
| Using car oil | Clutch slippage | Verify JASO MA/MA2 |
| Not verifying oil level after fill | Engine damage from under/over-fill | Start engine, wait, recheck |
| Double-gasketing the filter | Major oil leak | Confirm old gasket removed |
Oil Disposal
Never pour used oil down drains, into trash, or on the ground.
- Transfer oil to a clean sealed container
- Drop at: AutoZone, O'Reilly Auto Parts, Advance Auto Parts, NAPA (all free recycling)
- Include old oil filter
- Municipal recycling or hazardous waste facilities also accept oil
- Never mix with other fluids
