Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Warm the Engine
Start your CVO Road Glide and run for 5-10 minutes. The M-117 engine with its liquid-cooled heads warms thoroughly for complete drainage. Park on level ground and let sit for 5 minutes.
Step 2: Position and Elevate the Bike
The CVO Road Glide is a heavy touring machine at approximately 890 lbs. Use a motorcycle-rated lift or jack with jack stands. Ensure the bike is level.
Step 3: Remove the Oil Fill Cap
Remove the oil fill cap/dipstick from the right side oil tank. On Road Glide models, access is behind the right side panel area. This allows air in for complete drainage.
Step 4: Position the Drain Pan
Use a 6-quart minimum drain pan beneath the drain plug. The CVO M-117 holds more oil than standard touring models.
Step 5: Remove the Drain Plug
Using a 3/8 inch hex wrench, loosen the drain plug counterclockwise. Remove by hand for the last turns, ready for warm oil.
Warning: Oil may be hot. Wear gloves and eye protection.
Step 6: Drain the Oil Fully
Allow 10-15 minutes for full drainage. The larger M-117 displacement takes slightly longer to empty. Inspect drain plug and oil for debris.
Step 7: Replace the Drain Plug Washer
Remove the old copper crush washer and replace with a new one. Never reuse — single-use only.
Step 8: Reinstall the Drain Plug
Clean threads, install with new washer, hand-tighten, torque to 14-18 ft-lbs.
Do NOT over-torque. Stripped oil tank threads are expensive to repair.
Step 9: Remove the Old Oil Filter
Locate the oil filter on the oil tank. Position the drain pan beneath. Wrench to loosen, then hand-spin off. Check that the old gasket came off with the filter.
Step 10: Prepare the New Filter
- Coat the new filter rubber gasket with clean 20W-50 synthetic oil
- Confirm the old gasket was removed from the mounting surface
- Do NOT pre-fill — mounts from below/spill risk
Step 11: Install the New Oil Filter
Thread by hand until the gasket contacts the seat. Tighten an additional 3/4 turn by hand.
Hand-tighten only. No tools.
Step 12: Add New Oil
Pour approximately 4.0 quarts of SAE 20W-50 full synthetic motorcycle oil. Use H-D SYN3 (full synthetic) or Formula+ Synthetic. Ensure JASO MA/MA2 rating.
CVO Recommendation: Full synthetic oil is highly recommended for these premium 117 engines, especially under touring loads and high ambient temperatures.
Step 13: Verify the Oil Level
- Rest the fill cap on the threads without tightening
- Start the engine, idle 2-3 minutes
- Shut off, wait 1-2 minutes
- Check the dipstick with bike level — between Add and Full marks
- Add in 1/4 cup increments if low, rechecking each time
- Tighten fill cap when correct
Step 14: Final Checks
- Check leaks at drain plug and filter
- Carefully wipe any oil from CVO premium paint surfaces and chrome Shark Nose fairing
- Reset maintenance reminder on the CVO infotainment display
- Dispose of used oil properly (see below)
Tips, Warnings and Common Mistakes
Helpful Tips
- Premium oil for premium motorcycle: CVO Road Glide uses SYN3 full synthetic — this is not optional for optimal M-117 performance.
- Protect the fairing: The Shark Nose fairing makes the CVO Road Glide distinctive. Take care not to drip oil on painted surfaces.
- Frequent changes: The 117 cubic-inch engine under premium CVO tuning benefits from oil changes every 3,000-5,000 miles.
- Record everything: CVO ownership documentation adds significant resale value. Keep thorough records.
Warnings
- NEVER use automotive oil with friction modifiers — clutch slippage results.
- Do NOT over-torque drain plug — aluminum tank threads are vulnerable.
- Full synthetic is strongly recommended for CVO models.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
| Mistake | Consequence | How to Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Using mineral oil on CVO M-117 | Sub-optimal protection on premium engine | Use SYN3 full synthetic |
| Over-torquing drain plug | Stripped threads | 14-18 ft-lbs with torque wrench |
| Reusing drain washer | Oil leaks | Replace every change |
| Using car oil | Clutch damage | JASO MA/MA2 required |
| Not checking level after fill | Engine damage risk | Start, wait, recheck dipstick |
| Double-gasketing filter | Major oil leak | Verify old gasket removed |
Oil Disposal
Never pour used oil down drains, into trash, or on the ground.
- Seal in a clean container (empty oil jugs work perfectly)
- AutoZone, O'Reilly, Advance Auto, NAPA — all accept used oil and filters free
- Municipal recycling and hazardous waste centers also accept
- Never mix with other automotive fluids
