Oil Change Guide: 2025 BMW S 1000 R

The 2025 BMW S 1000 R is BMW's naked superbike, built around the same 999cc liquid-cooled inline-4 engine that powers the S 1000 RR. This award-winning powerplant features BMW's ShiftCam variable valve timing, titanium intake valves, and finger-followers with a 13.5:1 compression ratio producing 165 hp at 11,750 rpm.

This engine uses a cast aluminum wet sump lubrication system with a wet multi-plate clutch running in oil. The S 1000 R's high-revving inline-4 demands clean, high-quality synthetic oil to protect its tight tolerances and ShiftCam mechanism.

BMW publishes LongLife service intervals monitored by OBD, but most independent shops and experienced riders recommend changing oil every 5,000-6,000 miles or annually for optimal engine life and performance.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Warm Up the Engine

Start the S 1000 R and let it idle for 3-5 minutes until the oil reaches normal operating temperature (approximately 80-100°C / 175-212°F). Warm oil flows significantly faster and carries more suspended contaminants with it. Never change oil on a completely cold engine — the oil left behind will be thicker and leave more debris in the sump.

Step 2: Secure the Bike

Place the motorcycle on its center stand or a rear paddock stand on level ground. The S 1000 R must be perfectly upright and level for an accurate oil level reading through the sight glass. Do not rely on a side stand for an oil change.

Step 3: Open the Oil Fill Cap

The oil fill cap is located on the right side of the crankcase, just behind the front cylinder. Twist counterclockwise to remove and set it on a clean rag. Opening the cap allows air to enter and assists gravity drainage.

Step 4: Position the Drain Pan

Slide a drain pan capable of holding at least 3.5 liters (4 quarts) beneath the engine. The S 1000 R drain plugs discharge downward, so position the pan to catch the flow. Note that the exhaust headers run below the engine — avoid contact with hot pipes.

Step 5: Remove the Main Drain Plug

Using a 6mm Allen socket with an extension, loosen and remove the main engine oil drain plug from the bottom of the oil pan. Allow the oil to drain for 5-10 minutes until the flow reduces to a drip.

Warning: Engine oil temperature can reach 150-200°F (66-93°C) at operating temperature. Wear nitrile gloves and do not reach over the exhaust headers — headers can exceed 600°F (316°C).

Step 6: Remove Auxiliary Drain Plugs

The S 1000 R has two smaller auxiliary drain plugs on the cylinder heads that collect residual oil. Remove these with a 5mm Allen socket. This step is optional but recommended for a complete oil change — approximately 15-20% of the total oil remains in the head passages if these are not opened.

Tip: The auxiliary plugs use metric crush washers as well. Have replacements ready.

Step 7: Remove the Oil Filter

The spin-on oil filter is mounted on the right side of the engine, behind a small plastic splash guard. Remove the guard (typically 2-3 bolts). Using a strap-type filter wrench or 76mm cup wrench, turn counterclockwise to remove.

Important: As the filter comes loose, oil will spill from the filter housing and the engine gallery. Position a rag to catch the drip. Ensure the old rubber gasket peels off with the filter and is not stuck to the mounting surface.

Step 8: Prepare and Install the New Filter

Wipe the mounting surface clean with a shop rag. Apply a thin film of clean 5W-40 synthetic oil to the new filter's rubber gasket — this ensures a proper seal and makes the next removal easier. Screw the new filter onto the adapter by hand until it makes contact with the surface, then tighten an additional 3/4 to 1 turn. Do NOT use tools to tighten — hand-tightening is sufficient and prevents gasket damage.

Step 9: Install New Drain Plug Washers and Reinstall Plugs

Clean each drain plug and replace its copper crush washer (BMW part 07 11 9 963 158 for the main plug, equivalent sizes for aux plugs). Reinstall the plugs and torque to specification:

Warning: BMW engine cases are cast aluminum and the drain plug threads can strip if over-tightened. Always use a calibrated torque wrench. If threads feel loose or the plug will not torque properly, do not force it — seek professional repair.

Step 10: Add Fresh Oil

Using a narrow-spout funnel, slowly pour 2.5 liters (2.6 qt) of fresh 5W-40 fully synthetic motorcycle oil meeting API SN (or newer) and JASO MA2 specifications. Pause to check the sight glass.

BMW officially recommends Castrol Power1 Racing 5W-40, but any quality JASO MA2 synthetic is acceptable:

Important: Do NOT use automotive oils labeled "Resource Conserving" or "Energy Conserving" — these contain friction modifiers that will cause the S 1000 R's wet multi-plate clutch to slip. Always verify the JASO MA2 certification mark on the bottle.

Step 11: Check the Oil Level

Add oil incrementally until the sight glass reads approximately halfway between the MIN and MAX marks. Reinstall the oil fill cap. The bike must be upright and on level ground during this check.

Step 12: Circulate Oil Through the System

Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes. Watch the oil pressure warning light — it should extinguish within 2-3 seconds. If the light stays on, shut off the engine and check the filter seating and oil level. Listen for unusual noises.

After the oil has circulated, turn off the engine.

Step 13: Final Oil Level Check and Top-Off

Wait 30-60 seconds for oil to drain back into the sump and settle. Check the sight glass again. The oil level should be between the MIN and MAX marks, ideally near the upper third.

If the level is below MIN, add oil in 50ml increments. If slightly above MAX, it is generally safe for riding but avoid revving high until an opportunity to drain a small amount presents itself.

BMW specifies: Oil level should never be above MAX or below MIN. Running below MIN risks oil starvation at high RPM. Running above MAX can cause oil foaming, increased crankcase pressure, and seal leaks.

Step 14: Reset the Service Indicator

The S 1000 R uses BMW's LongLife OBD system to monitor oil quality. Reset the service interval:

  1. Turn the ignition to ON (engine off)
  2. Press and hold the BC button on the Multi-Controller
  3. When the SERVICE menu appears, navigate to the oil service entry
  4. Hold the button to confirm the reset
  5. Verify "Oil Service Reset" or similar confirmation appears on the TFT display

Exact steps may vary slightly depending on firmware version. Refer to your Owner's Manual.

Step 15: Test Ride and Leak Check

Take the S 1000 R for a short 1-2 mile ride, keeping the engine in mid-range RPM. After the ride, check beneath the bike for any oil drips. Inspect the filter mounting surface and drain plugs. Re-check the oil level through the sight glass.

Tips, Warnings & Common Mistakes

Mistake Consequence How to Avoid
Using automotive "Resource Conserving" oils Friction modifiers cause wet clutch slippage, poor downshifts, reduced acceleration Always verify JASO MA2 on the label
Not replacing the crush washer Oil seepage at the drain plug, potential seepage into threads Replace M12 Cu washer every change
Over-tightening drain plug Stripped aluminum threads in the sump, expensive repair Use a torque wrench, 33 Nm for main plug
Skipping auxiliary drain plugs 15-20% old contaminated oil remains in head passages Remove all three drain plugs each change
Overfilling past MAX Oil foaming, increased crankcase pressure, seal leaks, excessive consumption Check sight glass with bike upright; add slowly
Underfilling below MIN Oil starvation at high RPM, engine damage Verify level between MIN and MAX lines
Not resetting service indicator Incorrect LongLife calculations, premature service warnings Reset via Multi-Controller after every change
Changing oil on a cold engine Incomplete drainage, contaminants left in the sump Warm engine to operating temp first
Double-gasketing the filter Old gasket stuck to surface + new gasket = massive leak Always verify the old gasket came off with the filter

Oil Disposal

Used motor oil is hazardous waste and must be recycled. Never pour used oil down drains, into soil, into storm sewers, or into household trash.

Where to recycle used oil and filters in the United States: - AutoZone — Free used oil and filter recycling at all retail locations - O'Reilly Auto Parts — Free oil recycling, filters accepted when drained - Advance Auto Parts — Free recycling of used oil and filters - Walmart Auto Care Centers — Accepts used oil at most locations - Pep Boys — Free recycling program - Local household hazardous waste facilities — Check Earth911.com for your nearest location - Many BMW Motorrad dealerships — Accept used oil from DIY customers (call ahead to confirm)

Recycle used oil filters separately: drain them for 24 hours by puncturing the dome and placing them filter-end down, then place in a sealed plastic bag for recycling.
