Difficulty & Time Estimate
- Difficulty Level: Intermediate (3 out of 5)
- Estimated Time: 60-90 minutes (first-timer: 90-120 min)
- Best Done: On a warm engine (oil flows easier after riding)
- Note: The boxer twin uses a dry sump system with the oil tank as a separate reservoir. The engine must be started briefly after draining to circulate remaining oil into the sump before a second drain — this is unique to boxer engines.
Warning: The BMW R 1250 GS oil change is more involved than typical motorcycles. The dry sump system requires two drain-and-fill cycles and the oil filter is located deep in the cylinder V. Ensure you have adequate time and tools before starting.
Important Pre-Change Notes for the Dry Sump System
The BMW R 1250 GS uses a dry sump oil system. This means oil is stored in a separate external tank (on the left side behind a cover panel), not in a conventional oil pan. The system works as follows:
- Oil is stored in the external tank
- A feed pump sends oil to the engine
- A separate scavenge pump returns used oil from the engine back to the tank
- The lower cylinder V holds residual oil that drains out through the oil filter port
This means you MUST drain twice and run the engine between drains to get a complete oil change.

Step by Step Instructions
Step 1: Warm the Engine
Run your R 1250 GS for 5 to 10 minutes to warm the oil. Warm oil flows more freely and carries suspended contaminants with it. Do NOT perform an oil change on a completely cold engine. After warming, park the bike on a level surface and place it on the center stand or a paddock stand. Let it sit for 2 to 3 minutes so oil drains back into the tank.
Step 2: Access the Oil Fill Cap
Remove the left-side fairing cover panel to access the oil fill cap. On the R 1250 GS, the oil tank is located on the left side of the engine. A quarter-turn fastener holds the cover panel in place.
Tip: Take a photo before removing the panel so you remember how it goes back on.
Step 3: Position the Drain Pan
Place your oil drain pan beneath the engine. The oil drain plug is located at the bottom center of the boxer engine, between the cylinders. Make sure the pan has at least 6 quart capacity.
Step 4: Remove the Drain Plug and Drain
Using an 8mm hex socket, loosen the drain bolt on the bottom of the engine. Turn counterclockwise to loosen. Finish removing by hand, being ready for hot oil to flow immediately.
Warning: Oil may be hot. Wear nitrile gloves and eye protection to avoid burns. The boxer twin's layout means oil can spray in multiple directions — stand clear when first opening.
Step 5: First Oil Drain and Run
Allow oil to drain completely during the first cycle. This takes about 10 minutes. After the initial flow stops, start the engine and let it idle for 10-15 seconds only. This pumps the remaining oil from the engine galleries down into the sump. Do not exceed 15 seconds — you are running the engine with minimal oil circulation at this point.
Turn off the engine and let the remaining oil drain completely. This second drain removes oil that was still in the engine after the first drain.
Critical: This two-stage drain is essential for dry sump BMW boxer engines. Skipping this step means old oil remains in the engine.
Step 6: Clean and Prepare the Drain Plug
Clean the drain plug thoroughly with a rag. Inspect the threads for any damage or wear. Replace the copper crush washer with a new one (BMW part number 11 42 1 743 268). Never reuse a deformed washer.
Step 7: Reinstall the Drain Plug
Clean the area around the drain plug opening. Install the drain plug with a new washer and hand-tighten. Use a torque wrench to tighten to 32 Nm (24 ft-lbs).
Important: The engine crankcase is aluminum. Over-torquing will strip the threads and require expensive repair. Always use a torque wrench.
Step 8: Remove the Oil Filter Housing
The oil filter housing is located deep in the cylinder V at the front of the engine. It is a black plastic cap with an internal filter element. Use a 76mm 14-flute oil filter wrench to unscrew the housing cap. Remove the old filter element from inside the housing cap.
Important notes: - Check that the old O-ring came out with the housing cap. A stuck O-ring will cause a leak. - The housing cap is plastic — do not overtighten or use excessive force when removing. - There may be residual oil in the housing — position your drain pan beneath it.
Step 9: Prepare the New Filter Element
Take the new filter cartridge and install it into the housing cap. Make sure the new O-ring (typically included with genuine BMW filters) is seated properly in its groove on the housing cap.
Lubricate the O-ring with a small amount of clean fresh oil. This ensures a proper seal and makes the next service easier.
Tip: Pre-fill the new filter element with clean oil before installation. This reduces the amount of time the engine runs without full oil pressure on startup.
Step 10: Install the Filter Housing
Screw the housing cap with the new filter element back into the engine by hand. When hand-tight, use your torque wrench to tighten to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
Critical: The housing cap is plastic. Do not use excessive torque. 20 Nm is the maximum. Over-tightening can crack the housing or strip the threads.
Step 11: Add New Oil
Using a funnel with a narrow spout, pour approximately 3.0 liters (3.2 US quarts) of SAE 5W-40 API SL (or BMW Advantec Ultimate 5W-40) into the oil fill port.
Important: Do not use automotive oils with fricti
on modifiers. The R 1250 GS has a wet clutch. Verify JASO MA or MA2 compatibility if using non-BMW oil. Good alternatives to BMW Advantec include: - Castrol Power 1 5W-40 - Motul 7100 5W-40 - Shell Advance Ultra 5W-40
Step 12: Start Engine and Check
- Install the oil fill cap and tighten securely
- Start the engine and let it idle for 2 to 3 minutes. The oil pressure warning light should go off within seconds.
- Turn off the engine and wait 1 to 2 minutes for oil to settle
- Check the oil level using the electronic oil level indicator on the TFT display, OR use the dipstick on the fill cap
- If needed, add oil in small increments and recheck
- The oil level should be between the minimum and maximum marks
Tip: The 2025 R 1250 GS features a 6.5-inch TFT display with electronic oil level monitoring. You can check the oil level through the service menu on the display. However, always confirm with the physical dipstick.
Step 13: Reset Service Indicator
- Turn on the ignition (do not start the engine)
- Press and hold the BC (Board Computer) button on the left handlebar
- Navigate to the service menu on the TFT display
- Select "Reset Service" to clear the oil change reminder
- Confirm the reset when prompted
Step 14: Final Inspection
- Check for leaks around the drain plug
- Check for leaks around the oil filter housing cap
- Check the oil filler cap is tight and sealing
- Clean up any spilled oil
- Reinstall the left-side fairing cover panel
- Verify no tools or materials were left on or near the bike
Tips, Warnings & Common Mistakes
Helpful Tips
- BMW Advantec Ultimate 5W-40 is the OEM recommended oil. It is specifically formulated for the ShiftCam boxer engine.
- Good alternatives: Castrol Power 1 5W-40, Motul 7100 5W-40, Shell Advance Ultra 5W-40
- Always verify API SL or JASO MA2 rating for wet clutch compatibility
- Change oil before long storage periods or at the start of riding season
- Keep a maintenance log with date, mileage, oil brand used, and filter part number
- The boxer engine's dry sump system is unique — do not confuse it with conventional wet sump motorcycles
- For adventure touring, consider reducing the interval to 5,000 miles, especially in dusty conditions
Warnings
- NEVER skip the 10-15 second engine run between drains. This is critical for flushing residual oil from the dry sump system.
- NEVER run the engine for more than 15 seconds during the intermediate drain — the oil pump is pulling very little oil at this point.
- NEVER confuse the oil system with the liquid cooling system. The R 1250 GS is air/liquid-cooled.
- NEVER over-torque the plastic oil filter housing cap. It cracks easily at high torque.
- NEVER over-torque the drain plug. The aluminum crankcase threads strip at forces above 32 Nm.
- Always use a motorcycle-specific oil filter. Automotive filters may not have correct bypass valve pressure.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
| Mistake | Consequence | How to Prevent |
|---|---|---|
| Skipping the intermediate engine run | Old oil remains in engine, reduced lubrication | Start engine for 10-15 seconds after first drain |
| Running engine too long during intermediate drain | Engine runs with insufficient oil — catastrophic damage | Maximum 15 seconds only |
| Over-torquing oil filter housing cap | Cracked plastic housing, oil leak | Torque to 20 Nm maximum, use torque wrench |
| Over-torquing drain plug | Stripped crankcase threads | Always use a torque wrench at 32 Nm |
| Reusing drain plug washer | Oil leak after oil change | Always use new copper washer (BMW 11 42 1 743 268) |
| Not replacing the housing cap O-ring | Oil leak from filter housing | Use new O-ring (included with genuine BMW filter) |
| Using automotive oil with friction modifiers | Clutch slippage | Verify JASO MA or MA2 on label |
| Not resetting the service indicator | False service warnings on TFT display | Reset through TFT display service menu |
| Not checking oil level after refill | Engine damage from low oil | Start engine, let settle, recheck with dipstick |
Oil Disposal
Used motor oil is hazardous waste and should never be poured down a drain, into the trash, or on the ground.
- Pour all drained oil into a clean container with a tight-fitting lid, such as the empty oil bottles
- Take it to a certified recycling center. Most auto parts stores accept used oil for free: - AutoZone: Free oil recycling at all locations - O'Reilly Auto Parts: Free oil and filter recycling - Advance Auto Parts: Free oil recycling - NAPA Auto Parts: Accepts oil at most locations (call ahead to confirm)
- Take the old oil filter and paper filter element with you. These stores typically also recycle used oil filters.
- Your municipal recycling center or household hazardous waste facility is another option.
- Never mix used oil with other automotive fluids (antifreeze, brake fluid, transmission fluid) as this makes recycling difficult or impossible.
