Step-by-Step Instructions

Headlight (H7) — Low Beam (Halogen)

The 2025 R1 uses an H7 halogen bulb for the low beam projector housed deep within the aggressive full fairing. The high beam is an LED module. Access to the H7 requires removal of the upper fairing and windshield.

Warning: The R1 fairing is tightly engineered for aerodynamics. Fairing panels interlock and share fasteners — work methodically and label all fasteners with their positions.

Step 1: Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key. Allow the headlight to cool for at least 15 minutes.

Step 2: Remove the seat (unlock via the keyhole on the right side). This provides access to the rear of the fairing and tail light connections.

Step 3: Remove the windshield bolts (4x 8mm bolts along the top edge). Carefully lift off the windshield — it is made of clear plastic and scratches easily. Set on a soft surface.

Step 4: Remove the upper fairing bolts — typically 10mm bolts along the top and sides of the upper cowl. Note that bolt lengths may differ. Keep bolts organized.

Step 5: Remove the side mirror bolts (if they pass through or block fairing removal) — typically 10mm.

Step 6: Release the fairing clips using a panel clip tool. The R1 uses numerous hidden clips along the tank area and frame. Work slowly.

Step 7: Carefully pull the upper fairing forward. Disconnect the front turn signal harness connectors and any position light connectors that route through the fairing.

Step 8: Set the upper fairing on a protected surface.

Step 9: Access the H7 headlight housing from behind the projector assembly. Disconnect the electrical connector from the H7 bulb base.

Step 10: Remove the rubber dust boot from the rear of the headlight projector housing. Due to the R1's tight packaging, this may require working around the upper triple clamp area.

Step 11: Release the wire retainer clip by pressing the release arm inward and sliding the clip away from the bulb base tabs.

Step 12: Pull the old H7 bulb straight out of the projector housing. Do not touch the glass — handle by the metal base only.

Step 13: Open the new H7 bulb with nitrile gloves on. Clean with isopropyl alcohol if glass is touched.

Step 14: Insert the new H7 bulb into the projector housing, aligning the two locating tabs on the base. Push firmly until fully seated.

Step 15: Reinstall the wire retainer clip — it must snap securely and hold the bulb firmly against the projector reflector.

Step 16: Reinstall the rubber dust boot. Align orientation marks and press evenly for a complete, airtight seal.

Step 17: Reconnect the electrical connector.

Step 18: Test with ignition ON — verify low beam function.

Note: The high beam on the R1 is an LED projector module. If not functioning, the complete LED headlight assembly must be replaced — no bulb replacement is possible. Consult a Yamaha dealer for LED module service.

Step 19: Reinstall the upper fairing: reconnect all harnesses, engage the fairing onto its mounting tabs, and reinstall all bolts. Do not overtighten — use a torque wrench.

Step 20: Reinstall the windshield with 8mm bolts to 2.0-3.0 Nm.

Step 21: Verify headlight beam alignment (see Tips section).

Front Turn Signals (1157NA) — Amber

Step 1: The R1 front turn signals are integrated into the lower fairing extensions on the sides. Access requires partial lower fairing removal.

Step 2: Remove the lower fairing side panel screws (typically 8mm or 10mm bolts and Phillips screws). Keep organized — they differ in length.

Step 3: Pull the rubber access grommet at the rear of each turn signal housing to expose the socket.

Step 4: Turn the socket counterclockwise (quarter-turn) and pull it out.

Step 5: Remove the old 1157NA bulb (press in, turn counterclockwise).

Step 6: Install the new 1157NA amber bulb (press in, turn clockwise to lock bayonet base).

Step 7: Test with the turn signal switch — verify normal amber flash rate.

Step 8: Reinsert the socket and turn clockwise to lock.

Step 9: Reseat the rubber grommet completely for full weather seal.

Step 10: Reinstall all lower fairing side panels and torque to spec.

Rear Turn Signals (1157NA) — Amber

Step 1: The R1 rear turn signals are integrated into the compact tail section — access requires tail fairing/undertray partial removal.

Step 2: Partially remove the rear undertray or access the turn signals from behind the tail section through the rear fender area.

Step 3: Pull back the rubber access grommet on each housing.

Step 4: Turn the socket counterclockwise and pull out the bulb assembly.

Step 5: Remove the old 1157NA bulb (press in, turn counterclockwise). Install the new one (press in, turn clockwise).

Step 6: Test both signals with the switch.

Step 7: Reinsert sockets, turn clockwise to lock.

Step 8: Fully reseat rubber grommets.

Step 9: Reinstall any undertray or tail section panels removed.

Tail / Brake Light (1157) — Dual Contact

Step 1: The R1 tail light is a highly integrated, slim unit built into the tail section with sharp aerodynamic lines.

Step 2: Remove the rear seat (key unlock).

Step 3: Remove the Phillips or 8mm screws holding the tail light lens assembly to the housing (typically 2-3 screws).

Step 4: Gently separate the lens from the housing to expose the bulb sockets. Be careful — the R1 tail is tightly integrated with the fairing.

Step 5: Identify the 1157 dual-contact tail/brake socket.

Step 6: Turn the socket counterclockwise and remove it.

Step 7: Remove the old 1157 bulb (push in, turn counterclockwise).

Step 8: Install the new 1157 dual-contact bulb: push in, turn clockwise. Verify offset pin alignment.

Step 9: Reinsert the socket and turn clockwise to lock.

Step 10: Reattach the lens and tighten screws to 1.0-1.5 Nm.

Step 11: Test all: tail (ignition ON), brake (front and rear), turn signals.

Step 12: Reinstall the rear seat.

License Plate Light (194 / W5W / T10)

Step 1: The R1 license plate light is integrated into the tail section fender.

Step 2: Access from behind/underneath the tail section.

Step 3: Remove the screw or pry open the lens cover.

Step 4: Pull the old 194 wedge bulb straight out (friction fit).

Step 5: Push the new 194 bulb into the socket.

Step 6: Reinstall the lens cover.

Step 7: Verify illumination with ignition ON.

Position Lamp (T10/W5W)

Step 1: The R1 has T10/W5W position lamps on either side of the headlight housing.

Step 2: Access from behind the upper fairing (requires fairing removal — see headlight section).

Step 3: Pull the old T10 wedge bulb straight out. Push the new one in.

Step 4: Verify operation with ignition ON.

Lower Fairing Accent Light (T4.2 Wedge)

Step 1: The R1 has small T4.2 accent/marker lights on the lower fairing edges.

Step 2: Access from behind the lower fairing (requires partial lower fairing removal).

Step 3: Pull the old T4.2 wedge bulb straight out. Push the new one in.

Step 4: Verify operation and reinstall fairing panels.

Tips, Warnings & Common Mistakes

Headlight Alignment After Replacement

  1. Park the R1 upright on level ground, 25 feet from a flat wall.
  2. Measure the headlight center height (approximately 29-31 inches / 74-79 cm with rake and low seating position).
  3. Draw a horizontal reference line at measured height and a second line 2 inches below.
  4. With low beam active, the bright cutoff should be at or below the lower line.
  5. Adjust via the adjustment screw accessible through the fairing opening — the R1's projector lens has a sharp, clean cutoff.

LED Module Warning

The R1's high beam is an LED module integrated into the lighting assembly. It is NOT user-replaceable. If the high beam fails, the entire headlight unit must be replaced through an authorized Yamaha dealership.
