Step-by-Step Instructions

Headlight (H4 / 9003) — Low and High Beam

The 2025 XSR900 features a classic round H4 headlight with combined low and high beam filaments in a single bulb, housed in a retro-style round shell. No fairing removal is needed.

Step 1: Turn the ignition OFF and allow the headlight to cool for at least 10 minutes.

Step 2: Locate the headlight shell mounting — the round shell is held by two bolts on either side of the headlight bracket (10mm or Phillips). Loosen or remove these to swing the shell downward for access.

Step 3: Disconnect the three-pin H4 electrical connector from the bulb base.

Step 4: Remove the rubber dust boot from the rear of the headlight housing. Pull evenly from all sides.

Step 5: Release the wire retainer clip: press inward and slide away from the bulb tabs, then unhook.

Step 6: Pull the old H4 bulb straight out. Handle by the metal base only — do not touch the glass.

Step 7: Open the new H4 bulb with nitrile gloves. Clean with isopropyl alcohol if touched.

Step 8: Insert the new H4 bulb, aligning the offset tab on the base. Push firmly until seated.

Step 9: Reinstall the wire retainer clip — verify it snaps securely.

Step 10: Reinstall the rubber dust boot. Align orientation marks and press evenly for a complete seal.

Step 11: Reconnect the three-pin electrical connector.

Step 12: Test with ignition ON — verify low beam, then high beam.

Step 13: Reinstall the headlight shell and tighten bolts to 1.5-2.0 Nm.

Step 14: Verify headlight beam alignment (see Tips section).

Front Turn Signals (1157NA) — Amber

Step 1: XSR900 front turn signals are retro-style round signals mounted on stalks from the triple clamp — no fairing.

Step 2: Pull the rubber access grommet at the rear of each housing to expose the socket.

Step 3: Turn the socket counterclockwise (quarter-turn) and pull it out.

Step 4: Remove the old 1157NA bulb (press in, turn counterclockwise).

Step 5: Install the new 1157NA amber bulb (press in, turn clockwise to lock).

Step 6: Test — verify normal amber flash rate.

Step 7: Reinsert socket and turn clockwise to lock.

Step 8: Reseat rubber grommet completely.

Rear Turn Signals (1157NA) — Amber

Step 1: Access rear turn signals from behind the rear fender. On the XSR900, these are retro-style stalks mounted on a bracket under the tail/seat cowl.

Step 2: Pull back the rubber access grommet on each housing.

Step 3: Turn the socket counterclockwise and pull out the bulb assembly.

Step 4: Remove the old 1157NA bulb (press in, turn counterclockwise). Install the new one (press in, turn clockwise).

Step 5: Test both signals.

Step 6: Reinsert sockets, turn clockwise to lock.

Step 7: Fully reseat rubber grommets.

Tail / Brake Light (1157) — Dual Contact

Step 1: The XSR900 tail light is a compact, modern unit on the rear fender beneath the seat cowl.

Step 2: Remove the two Phillips screws holding the tail light lens to the housing.

Step 3: Gently pull the lens cover away to expose the bulb sockets.

Step 4: Turn the 1157 socket counterclockwise and remove it.

Step 5: Remove the old 1157 bulb (push in, turn counterclockwise).

Step 6: Install the new 1157 dual-contact bulb (push in, turn clockwise). Offset pins ensure correct orientation.

Step 7: Reinsert socket and turn clockwise to lock.

Step 8: Reattach the lens and tighten Phillips screws to 1.0-1.5 Nm.

Step 9: Test all: tail, brake (front and rear), turn signals through tail housing.

License Plate Light (194 / W5W / T10)

Step 1: Locate the license plate light on the rear fender above the plate.

Step 2: Remove the screw or pop off the lens cover.

Step 3: Pull the old 194 wedge bulb straight out.

Step 4: Push the new 194 bulb into the socket.

Step 5: Reinstall the lens cover and secure.

Step 6: Verify with ignition ON.

Position Lamp (T10/W5W)

Step 1: The XSR900 has a T10/W5W position lamp integrated into the round headlight bezel area.

Step 2: Access from behind the headlight (requires loosening the headlight shell slightly).

Step 3: Pull the old T10 wedge bulb straight out. Push the new one in.

Step 4: Verify operation with ignition ON. Re-tighten shell bolts.

Side Indicator Light (T4.2 Wedge)

Step 1: Small T4.2 wedge side indicator lights are located on the headlight shell sides.

Step 2: Access from behind the headlight (shell removal helps — see headlight section).

Step 3: Pull the old T4.2 wedge bulb straight out. Push the new one in.

Step 4: Reassemble and test.

Tips, Warnings & Common Mistakes

Headlight Alignment After Replacement

  1. Park the XSR900 upright on level ground, 25 feet from a flat wall.
  2. Measure the headlight center height (approximately 32-34 inches / 81-86 cm with the upright seating position).
  3. Draw a horizontal reference line at measured height and a second line 2 inches below.
  4. With low beam on, the bright zone top should be at or below the lower line.
  5. Adjust via the adjustment screw on the headlight rear.

LED vs. Halogen — Pros and Cons

Feature Halogen LED
Brightness Good (standard) Excellent (up to 3x)
Color Temperature 3200K (warm yellow) 6000K (cool white)
Lifespan 500-1000 hours 25,000-50,000 hours
Power Draw Higher (60/55W H4) Lower (25-30W equiv.)
Heat Generation High Low
Cost $10-20 $30-80
Retro Style Match Warm halogen fits classic look perfectly Choose 4300K-5000K for warm-ish LED

LED Recommendation for XSR900: If choosing LED, consider 4300K-5000K warm white H7/H4 LEDs to maintain the classic retro appearance while gaining LED benefits. Pure 6000K can look harsh on a retro bike.
