Light Bulb Replacement Guide: 2025 Yamaha MT-09

This guide covers every exterior light bulb position on the 2025 Yamaha MT-09, including the headlight (low/high beam), front and rear turn signals, tail/brake light, running lights, position lamps, and license plate light. The MT-09 is a 889cc inline-3 naked sport bike with an aggressive 6450K LED-styled look — however, certain trim levels use an H7 halogen headlight with distinctive tri-bezel styling for the "three-eyed" appearance fronting the CP3 engine.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Headlight (H7) — Low and High Beam

The 2025 MT-09 uses H7 headlight bulbs for the low beam with a separate H7 for high beam. The dual-H7 design is housed in the aggressive, multi-section headlight housing that gives the MT-09 its signature "three-eyed" stare. Since it is a naked motorcycle, access is direct from behind the headlight housings.

Note: The MT-09 headlight contains two separate H7 bulbs — one for low beam and one for high beam. They are housed in separate reflectors but share the same housing assembly.

Step 1: Turn the ignition OFF and allow the headlight to cool for at least 10 minutes.

Step 2: For the low beam: Disconnect the electrical connector from the H7 bulb base by pressing the release tab and pulling straight out.

Step 3: Remove the rubber dust boot from the back of the low beam headlight housing. Pull evenly around the perimeter.

Step 4: Release the wire retainer clip by pressing inward and sliding it away from the bulb tabs.

Step 5: Pull the old H7 bulb straight out of the housing. Do not touch the glass — handle only by the metal base.

Step 6: Open the new H7 bulb with nitrile gloves. Clean with isopropyl alcohol if glass is touched.

Step 7: Insert the new H7 bulb into the housing, aligning the two locating tabs on the base. Push firmly until fully seated.

Step 8: Reinstall the wire retainer clip — it should snap securely and hold the bulb firmly.

Step 9: Reinstall the rubber dust boot, aligning the index mark. Press evenly for a complete seal.

Step 10: Repeat Steps 2-9 for the high beam H7 bulb (separate housing location).

Step 11: Reconnect both electrical connectors. Push firmly until each clicks.

Step 12: Test with the ignition ON — verify low beam, then toggle to high beam to confirm both.

Step 13: Verify headlight beam alignment (see Tips section).

Front Turn Signals (1157NA) — Amber

Step 1: MT-09 front turn signals are mounted on the fork tube brackets below the headlight — no fairing to remove.

Step 2: Pull the rubber access grommet at the rear of each turn signal housing to expose the socket.

Step 3: Turn the socket counterclockwise (quarter-turn) and pull it out.

Step 4: Remove the old 1157NA bulb: press into the socket and turn counterclockwise to unlock.

Step 5: Install the new 1157NA amber bulb: push into socket, turn clockwise to lock the bayonet base.

Step 6: Test with the turn signal switch — observe a steady, normal flash rate.

Step 7: Reinsert the socket and turn clockwise to lock.

Step 8: Reseat the rubber grommet fully to maintain the weather seal.

Rear Turn Signals (1157NA) — Amber

Step 1: Access rear turn signals from behind the rear fender. On the MT-09, these are mounted on stalks bolted to a bracket under the tail seat cowl.

Step 2: Pull back the rubber access grommet on each housing.

Step 3: Turn the socket counterclockwise and pull out the bulb assembly.

Step 4: Remove the old 1157NA bulb (press in, turn counterclockwise).

Step 5: Install the new 1157NA amber bulb (press in, turn clockwise to lock).

Step 6: Test both signals with the switch. Verify normal flash rate and dashboard indicator.

Step 7: Reinsert socket, turn clockwise to lock.

Step 8: Fully reseat rubber grommets.

Tail / Brake Light (1157) — Dual Contact

Step 1: Locate the tail light assembly integrated into the angular tail section/seat cowl of the MT-09. The tail light is compact, matching the MT design language with a sharp, pointed rear.

Step 2: Remove the two or three Phillips screws holding the tail light lens to the housing.

Step 3: Carefully separate the lens from the housing to reveal the bulb sockets.

Step 4: Identify the 1157 dual-contact tail/brake socket.

Step 5: Turn the socket counterclockwise and remove it.

Step 6: Remove the old 1157 bulb (push in, turn counterclockwise).

Step 7: Install the new 1157 dual-contact bulb: push in, turn clockwise. The offset bayonet pins ensure correct orientation — there are two possible alignment positions.

Step 8: Reinsert the socket and turn clockwise to lock.

Step 9: Reattach the lens and tighten Phillips screws to 1.0-1.5 Nm. Be gentle — the housing is plastic.

Step 10: Test all functions: tail light (ignition ON), brake light (front and rear lever/pedal), turn signals through the tail housing.

License Plate Light (194 / W5W / T10)

Step 1: Locate the license plate light on the rear fender just above the license plate mount.

Step 2: Remove the Phillips screw or pry off the plastic lens cover.

Step 3: Pull the old 194 wedge bulb straight out (friction fit).

Step 4: Push the new 194 bulb into the socket — it fits one way only.

Step 5: Reinstall the lens cover and secure.

Step 6: Verify illumination with ignition ON (shares tail circuit).

Position Lamp (T4.2 Wedge)

Step 1: The MT-09 has small T4.2 position/running lights integrated into the headlight bezel, positioned between the main headlight housings to complete the "three-eyed" look.

Step 2: Access from behind the headlight housing — you may need to remove a headlight housing screw for better access.

Step 3: Pull the old T4.2 wedge bulb straight out of its small socket (friction fit).

Step 4: Push the new T4.2 bulb into the socket.

Step 5: Verify operation with ignition ON.

Step 6: Reinstall any headlight screws you removed.

Tips, Warnings & Common Mistakes

Headlight Alignment After Replacement

  1. Park the MT-09 upright on level ground, 25 feet from a flat wall.
  2. Measure the headlight center height (approximately 33-35 inches / 84-89 cm with rider weight).
  3. Draw a horizontal reference line on the wall at measured height and a second line 2 inches below.
  4. With low beam active, the top of the cutoff should be at or below the lower line.
  5. Adjust via the vertical adjustment screw(s) on the headlight rear.

LED vs. Halogen — Pros and Cons

Feature Halogen LED
Brightness Good (standard) Excellent (up to 3x)
Color Temperature 3200K (warm yellow) 6000K (cool white)
Lifespan 500-1000 hours 25,000-50,000 hours
Power Draw Higher (55W each H7) Lower (25-30W equiv.)
Heat Generation High Low
Cost $15-25 each $40-80 each
Plug-and-play Yes May need adapters
MT-09 Aggressive Style Standard look Matches the bold aesthetic

LED Turn Signal Note: The MT-09 has relatively sophisticated electronics. LED turn signals may cause hyper-flashing. Use load resistors or Yamaha-spec LED assemblies with built-in resistors.
