Step-by-Step Instructions

Headlight (H4 / 9003) — Low and High Beam

The 2025 Yamaha Bolt uses a single H4 halogen headlight with combined low and high beam filaments. Being a no-fairing cruiser, access is straightforward from behind the round headlight shell.

Step 1: Turn the ignition OFF and allow the headlight to cool for at least 10 minutes.

Step 2: Locate the two Phillips headlight holding bolts on the sides of the headlight shell bracket. Loosen (do not fully remove) both bolts — this allows the shell to pivot down for access.

Step 3: Disconnect the three-pin H4 electrical connector from the bulb base behind the headlight shell.

Step 4: Remove the rubber dust boot sealing the rear of the headlight housing. Pull evenly from all sides.

Step 5: Release the wire retainer clip holding the bulb. Press the clip inward, slide it away from the bulb tabs, and unhook it.

Step 6: Pull the old H4 bulb straight out of the housing. Handle by the metal base only — do not touch the glass.

Step 7: Open the new H4 bulb with nitrile gloves on. If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe clean with isopropyl alcohol.

Step 8: Insert the new H4 bulb into the housing, aligning the offset tab on the metal base. Push firmly until seated.

Step 9: Reinstall the wire retainer clip over the bulb, hooking it securely.

Step 10: Reinstall the rubber dust boot. Ensure a complete seal — no gaps around the edges.

Step 11: Reconnect the three-pin electrical connector. Push until it clicks.

Step 12: Test with the ignition ON. Verify both low and high beam function before closing up.

Step 13: Swing the headlight shell back into position and tighten the two Phillips bolts to 1.5-2.0 Nm.

Step 14: Verify headlight beam alignment (see Tips section below).

Front Turn Signals (1157NA) — Amber

Step 1: The front turn signals are mounted on the fork lowers on stalks. No removal needed — access the rear of each housing.

Step 2: Pull the rubber access grommet at the rear of each turn signal housing to expose the socket.

Step 3: Turn the socket counterclockwise (quarter-turn) and pull it out of the housing.

Step 4: Remove the old 1157NA bulb: press gently into the socket and turn counterclockwise.

Step 5: Install the new 1157NA amber bulb: push into the socket, turn clockwise to lock. Verify the offset bayonet pins engaged.

Step 6: Test by activating the turn signal — observe the amber flash rate.

Step 7: Reinsert the socket into the housing, turn clockwise to lock.

Step 8: Reseat the rubber grommet completely to seal against moisture.

Rear Turn Signals (1157NA) — Amber

Step 1: Access rear turn signals from behind the rear fender beneath the tail section.

Step 2: Pull back the rubber access grommet on each housing.

Step 3: Turn the socket counterclockwise and pull the bulb assembly out.

Step 4: Remove the old 1157NA bulb (push in, turn counterclockwise).

Step 5: Install the new 1157NA amber bulb (push in, turn clockwise to lock).

Step 6: Test with the turn signal switch.

Step 7: Reinsert socket, turn clockwise to lock.

Step 8: Fully reseat rubber grommets.

Tail / Brake Light (1157) — Dual Contact

Step 1: Locate the tail light assembly on the rear fender bracket beneath the seat.

Step 2: Remove the two Phillips screws securing the tail light lens to the housing.

Step 3: Gently pull the lens cover off to expose the bulb sockets.

Step 4: Identify the 1157 dual-contact tail/brake socket.

Step 5: Turn the socket counterclockwise and remove it.

Step 6: Remove the old 1157 bulb (push in, turn counterclockwise).

Step 7: Install the new 1157 dual-contact bulb: push in, turn clockwise. Verify the offset pins ensure correct orientation (there are two possible positions).

Step 8: Reinsert the socket and turn clockwise to lock.

Step 9: Reattach the lens cover and tighten Phillips screws to 1.5-2.0 Nm.

Step 10: Test all functions: ignition ON (tail), brake lever (brake), foot pedal (brake), both turn signals.

License Plate Light (194 / W5W / T10)

Step 1: Locate the license plate light on the rear fender just above the license plate bracket.

Step 2: Remove the single Phillips screw or pop off the plastic lens cover.

Step 3: Pull the old 194 wedge bulb straight out of its socket (friction fit).

Step 4: Push the new 194 bulb into the socket — fits one way only.

Step 5: Reinstall the lens cover and secure with screw (0.5-1.0 Nm / snug).

Step 6: Verify illumination with ignition on (shares circuit with tail light).

Tips, Warnings & Common Mistakes

Headlight Alignment After Replacement

  1. Park the Bolt upright on level ground, 25 feet from a flat wall.
  2. Measure the distance from ground to center of the headlight (approximately 30-32 inches / 76-81 cm).
  3. Draw a horizontal reference line on the wall and a second line 2 inches below.
  4. With low beam active, the top of the bright zone should be at or below the lower line.
  5. Adjust using the two adjustment screws on the rear of the headlight bucket.

LED vs. Halogen — Pros and Cons

Feature Halogen LED
Brightness Good (standard) Excellent (up to 3x brighter)
Color Temperature 3200K (warm yellow) 6000K (cool white daylight)
Lifespan 500-1000 hours 25,000-50,000 hours
Power Draw Higher (60/55W H4) Lower (25-30W equivalent)
Heat Generation High Low
Cost $10-20 $30-80
Plug-and-play Yes (OEM spec) May need resistors for turn signals
Cruiser Style Match Warm halogen looks natural Cool white looks modern

LED Turn Signal Note: LED turn signals may cause hyper-flashing (rapid blinking) on the Bolt depending on model electronics. Add load resistors if needed, or use Yamaha-approved LED assemblies.

Legal Notes & Important Warnings

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake Consequence Prevention
Touching halogen bulb glass Premature failure from oil hotspots Use nitrile gloves
Skipping test before reassembly Need to reopen after finding bad bulb Test with ignition first
Wrong bulb type Incompatible with socket Confirm H4/9003 before purchase
Overtightening headlight bolts Stripped threads or cracked shell Torque to 1.5-2.0 Nm only
No dielectric grease Corroded contacts over time Apply thin coat to all contacts
Rubber boots not reseated Moisture damage to socket Verify seals are complete
Losing turn signal fasteners Missing parts on the road Use a magnetic tray
No headlight alignment check Blinds oncoming traffic or poor visibility Verify at 25 feet on level ground
White LED turn signals Illegal in many jurisdictions Only use amber-rated LED bulbs
