Fairing Removal Notes — ZX-6R Supersport (2026)

The 2026 ZX-6R retains the racing-derived full-fairing layout from 2025. Fairing removal follows the same sequence.

Fairing removal sequence for headlight access: 1. Remove windshield bolts (two 8mm bolts per side). 2. Remove upper fairing cowl bolts — two 8mm bolts along the top center ridge. 3. Remove side fairing-to-tank bolts — 10mm bolts, approximately two to three per side. 4. Release upper fairing push-clips along fuel tank seams with a plastic trim tool. 5. Remove lower-to-upper fairing bolts (8mm, two per side). 6. Release lower fairing tabs by gently pulling outward. Hidden clips near radiator shrouds. 7. Remove upper belly pan fairing (three 10mm bolts and several push-clips underneath).

Kawasaki Fairing Clip Warning: The 2026 ZX-6R uses the same fragile white plastic push-clips (P/N 92056-0107). Always use plastic trim tools to release them — metal screwdrivers will snap the clip pins. Buy a 50-pack of replacement clips before starting. Missing clips allow fairing vibration at track speeds, which can lead to panel fatigue cracks.

Reassembly tip: Work bottom-up — belly pan, lower fairing, side panels, upper fairing, windshield. Check all panel seams for even gaps before torquing final bolts.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Headlight (H7) — Low Beam

The 2026 ZX-6R uses an H7 halogen low beam bulb in its left projector housing. The compact fairing requires full lower fairing removal for access.

Step 1: Turn the ignition OFF and allow the headlight to cool for at least 10 minutes.

Step 2: Remove the lower fairing following the sequence above. The belly pan must come off completely for headlight access.

Step 3: Locate the H7 low beam connector behind the left projector housing. Press the locking tab and disconnect. Pull straight off — do not tug wires.

Step 4: Remove the rubber dust boot. Peel evenly — do not twist or tear.

Step 5: Release the wire retainer clip: squeeze spring steel arms inward and slide the clip upward and away from the bulb base.

Step 6: Pull the old H7 bulb out by the metal base. Never touch the glass.

Step 7: Unpack the new H7 bulb, handle by the base with nitrile gloves.

Step 8: Insert the new H7 into the projector housing. Align the two offset locating tabs and push fully seated.

Step 9: Reinstall the wire retainer clip — verify spring tension holds the bulb firmly.

Step 10: Replace the rubber dust boot, align indexing notch, and press until fully sealed.

Step 11: Reconnect the electrical connector until the locking tab clicks.

Step 12: Test low beam with ignition ON before fairing reassembly.

Headlight (H7) — High Beam

The high beam uses a separate H7 bulb in the right projector housing.

Step 1: Complete Steps 1-2 (ignition OFF, lower fairing removed).

Step 2: Disconnect the high beam H7 connector behind the right projector housing.

Step 3: Remove the rubber dust boot.

Step 4: Release the retainer clip and remove the old H7 bulb.

Step 5: Install the new H7 bulb, align tabs, push fully into housing.

Step 6: Reinstall retainer clip, dust boot, and connector.

Step 7: Test high beam with ignition ON.

Position / Running Lights (T4.2 Wedge)

Step 1: With lower fairing removed, locate the position light sockets on the outer sides of the headlight housing.

Step 2: Twist each socket counterclockwise (~90°) to unlock and pull out.

Step 3: Pull the old T4.2 wedge bulb straight out (friction-fit).

Step 4: Push the new LED T4.2 wedge into the socket — no twist needed.

Step 5: Reinsert and twist clockwise to lock.

Step 6: Verify with ignition ON.

Front Turn Signals (1157NA) — Amber

Step 1: Front turn signals are on stalks from the lower fairing corners. With the fairing off, access is direct.

Step 2: Pull the rubber access grommet at the rear of each turn signal housing.

Step 3: Turn the socket counterclockwise (~90°) and pull out.

Step 4: Remove the old 1157NA amber bulb: press in and turn counterclockwise to unlock the bayonet base.

Step 5: Install the new 1157NA amber bulb: push into socket and turn clockwise until locked. Check both offset pins engage.

Step 6: Test with ignition ON — amber flash on the dash indicator.

Step 7: Reinsert socket and turn clockwise to lock.

Step 8: Fully reseat the rubber access grommet to prevent moisture and debris ingress.

Rear Turn Signals (1157NA) — Amber

Step 1: Access rear turn signals from behind the tail section under the rear fender. Integrated into tail fairing.

Step 2: Remove the two 10mm bolts on the rear fender bracket if additional clearance is needed.

Step 3: Pull back the rubber access grommet on each housing.

Step 4: Turn each socket counterclockwise and pull out.

Step 5: Remove the old 1157NA bulb: push in gently and turn counterclockwise.

Step 6: Install the new 1157NA amber bulb: push in and turn clockwise to lock.

Step 7: Test both turn signals before reassembly.

Step 8: Reinsert sockets and turn clockwise. Reseat grommets. Reinstall any removed fender bolts and torque to 8.3 Nm (72 in-lbs / 6 ft-lbs).

Tail / Brake Light (12V 21/5W BAY15d) — Dual Filament

Step 1: Locate the tail light housing in the tail section behind the passenger grab bar.

Step 2: Remove the two Phillips screws securing the lens to the housing.

Step 3: Separate the lens and housing carefully.

Step 4: Identify the 12V 21/5W (BAY15d) dual-filament socket.

Step 5: Turn the socket counterclockwise and remove it.

Step 6: Remove the old bulb: push in gently and turn counterclockwise.

Step 7: Install the new 12V 21/5W dual-filament bulb: push in and turn clockwise. Offset pins ensure correct orientation.

Step 8: Reinsert the socket and turn clockwise to lock.

Step 9: Reattach the lens and tighten Phillips screws gently (1.5-2.0 Nm / 13-18 in-lbs).

Step 10: Test all functions: ignition ON (dim tail), front brake (bright brake), rear brake (bright brake), both turn signals.

License Plate Light (194 / W5W / T10)

Step 1: Locate the license plate light on the rear fender above the plate bracket.

Step 2: Remove the Phillips screw or pry off the lens housing.

Step 3: Pull the old 194 wedge bulb straight out (friction-fit).

Step 4: Push the new 194 bulb into the socket, aligning the flat side of the wedge base.

Step 5: Reinstall lens cover and tighten (1.5 Nm / 13 in-lbs / 1.1 ft-lbs).

Step 6: Verify illumination with ignition ON.

Tips, Warnings & Common Mistakes

Headlight Alignment After Replacement

  1. Park the ZX-6R upright on level ground, 25 feet from a flat wall. Rear paddock stand required.
  2. Measure ground-to-headlight-center — approximately 29 inches (74 cm) at curb weight.
  3. Draw a horizontal reference line at measured height and a second line 2 inches below.
  4. With low beam active, the bright zone cutoff should be at or below the lower line.
  5. Adjust using vertical and horizontal screws accessible behind the fairing opening. A long Phillips or 8mm socket works.
  6. Verify the projector produces a clean cutoff — misaligned H7 bulbs scatter the beam.
