Step-by-Step Instructions

Headlight (H4 / 9003) — Low and High Beam

The 2025 Vulcan 900 Classic uses a single H4 (9003/HB2) halogen bulb in its classic-style round chrome headlight bucket. Access is straightforward — no fairing or bodywork removal is needed. The headlight is mounted on the handlebar/fork crown area.

Step 1: Turn the ignition OFF and allow the headlight to cool for at least 10 minutes.

Step 2: Locate the three screws around the headlight lens bezel (outer chrome ring). These are typically JIS Phillips-head fasteners (#2).

Step 3: Loosen — but do not fully remove — the three bezel screws. They retain the chrome headlight ring in place.

Step 4: Once the screws are loosened enough, carefully remove the chrome bezel ring from the headlight assembly. Set aside on a soft cloth to prevent scratching.

Step 5: Disconnect the electrical connector from the back of the H4 bulb. Press the release tab and pull straight out.

Step 6: Remove the rubber dust boot that seals the rear of the headlight bucket. It pulls off with a gentle tug from all sides.

Step 7: Release the wire retainer clip by squeezing it inward and sliding it away from the bulb base.

Step 8: Pull the old H4 bulb straight out. Handle by the metal base only — do not touch the glass.

Step 9: Open the new H4 bulb and handle it by the base with nitrile gloves. If you touch the glass, clean with isopropyl alcohol.

Step 10: Insert the new H4 bulb into the headlight bucket, aligning the offset tab on the base. Push until fully seated.

Step 11: Reinstall the wire retainer clip over the bulb. The spring clip should snap firmly into place.

Step 12: Reinstall the rubber dust boot. Ensure a complete, even seal all around.

Step 13: Reconnect the electrical connector.

Step 14: Test with the ignition ON — verify both low and high beam function.

Step 15: Reinstall the chrome bezel ring. Align it with the headlight housing and carefully tighten the three retaining screws evenly. Do not overtighten — snug, then a gentle final quarter-turn. Torque to 2.5-5.0 Nm (22-44 in-lbs / 1.8-3.7 ft-lbs).

Step 16: Verify headlight beam alignment (see Tips section below).

Front Turn Signals (1157NA) — Amber

Step 1: The front turn signals on the Vulcan 900 Classic are mounted on the handlebar or front fork area on classic-style stalks. They are freely accessible — no bodywork removal is needed.

Step 2: Pull the rubber access grommet at the rear of each turn signal housing back to expose the socket.

Step 3: Turn the socket counterclockwise (¼ turn) and pull it out of the housing.

Step 4: Remove the old 1157NA amber bulb by pressing it into the socket and turning counterclockwise to unlock the bayonet base.

Step 5: Install the new 1157NA amber bulb: push into the socket and turn clockwise until it locks securely.

Step 6: Test with the ignition and turn signal switch to verify flashing.

Step 7: Reinsert the socket into the housing and turn clockwise to lock.

Step 8: Fully reseat the rubber grommet to seal against rain and moisture.

Rear Turn Signals (1157NA) — Amber

Step 1: Access the rear turn signals from behind the fender. The Vulcan 900 Classic's rear signals are mounted on the rear of the main frame, extending outward — easily accessible.

Step 2: Pull back the rubber access grommet on each signal housing.

Step 3: Turn the socket counterclockwise and pull the assembly out.

Step 4: Remove the old 1157NA bulb (push, turn counterclockwise).

Step 5: Install the new 1157NA amber bulb (push, turn clockwise).

Step 6: Test with both signals — check the dash indicator.

Step 7: Reinsert socket, turn clockwise to lock.

Step 8: Fully reseat rubber access grommet.

Tail / Brake Light (1157) — Dual Contact

Step 1: Locate the tail light housing on the Vulcan 900 Classic — it is classically styled and mounted on the rear fender.

Step 2: Remove the two or three Phillips screws that secure the tail light lens bezel to the housing.

Step 3: Gently pull the lens/bezel away from the housing to expose the bulb sockets.

Step 4: Identify the 1157 tail/brake socket (center or primary position).

Step 5: Turn the socket counterclockwise and remove it from the housing.

Step 6: Remove the old 1157 bulb by pushing in and turning counterclockwise.

Step 7: Install the new 1157 dual-contact bulb: push in and turn clockwise, verifying offset pin alignment.

Step 8: Reinsert the socket into the housing and turn clockwise.

Step 9: Reinstall the lens bezel and tighten the Phillips screws gently — the housing lens is easily cracked.

Step 10: Test all functions: ignition (tail), brake lever and pedal (brake), turn signals.

License Plate Light (194 / W5W / T10)

Step 1: Locate the license plate light on the rear fender bracket, typically mounted above the license plate on one side.

Step 2: Remove the small Phillips screw or gently pry the lens cover from the housing.

Step 3: Pull the old 194 wedge bulb straight out of the socket (friction-fit — no twist).

Step 4: Push the new 194 bulb into the socket. It only fits one way — align the wedge flat side.

Step 5: Reinstall the lens cover and tighten the screw (1.5 Nm / 13 in-lbs).

Step 6: Verify illumination with the ignition on (shares the tail circuit).

Front Fender Tip Light — If Equipped

Step 1: Some Vulcan 900 Classic trim levels include a small wedge-bulb running lamp at the front edge of the front fender.

Step 2: Access from underneath the fender — locate the small rubber-sealed socket.

Step 3: Pull the old wedge bulb straight out.

Step 4: Insert the new wedge bulb (check size — typically 168 or 194).

Step 5: Verify the rubber seal is intact and the light illuminates with ignition on.

Tips, Warnings & Common Mistakes

Headlight Alignment After Replacement

  1. Park the Vulcan 900 Classic upright on level ground, 25 feet from a wall. Use the side stand with a rider's weight or a paddock stand.
  2. Measure the center of the headlight from ground — this cruiser sits low, approximately 27-28 inches (69-71 cm).
  3. Draw a reference line at measured height and another 2 inches below.
  4. With low beam active, the bright zone cutoff should be at or below the lower line.
  5. Adjust via the two adjustment screws on the back of the headlight bucket — they are accessible from the top without tools.

LED vs. Halogen — Pros and Cons

Feature Halogen LED
Brightness Good (standard H4) Excellent (up to 3×)
Color Temperature 3200K (warm yellow) 6000K (cool white)
Lifespan 500-1000 hours 25,000-50,000 hours
Power Draw Higher (60/55W H4) Lower (25-30W equiv.)
Heat Generation High Low
Cost $10-20 $30-80
Plug-and-play Yes May need wiring adapters
Cruiser style match Warm tone matches classic look Cool tone — may look modern on classic

Cruiser Style Note: H4 LEDs produce a cooler 6000K white light that can look "modern" on a classic cruiser like the Vulcan 900. If authenticity is important, stick with halogen or choose a warmer LED (4300K).
