Step-by-Step Replacement Instructions
Step 1 — Safety First
- Park on a level surface and turn the ignition OFF.
- Remove the key from the ignition switch.
- Allow the motorcycle to cool completely before beginning work.
- Wear nitrile gloves to prevent skin oils from contaminating halogen bulb glass.
Step 2 — Headlight Bulb
The Indian Scout Bobber uses a classic round 7-inch headlight with a replaceable H4 halogen bulb.
- Locate the chrome trim ring secured to the headlight bucket with T-25 Torx bolts.
- Remove the trim ring bolts and set the ring aside.
- Pull the rubber dust cover straight off the rear of the headlight bucket.
- Disconnect the wiring harness connector by pressing the locking tab.
- Locate the metal wire retaining clip. Squeeze the clip ends and push up and aside to release.
- Grasp the H4 bulb base and pull it straight out.
- Do not touch the glass of the new H4 bulb. Use gloves or a clean cloth.
- Insert the new H4 bulb with the flat tab pointing downward.
- Reinstall the wire retaining clip.
- Reconnect the wiring harness.
- Replace the rubber dust cover and press firmly.
- Reinstall the trim ring and bolts. Torque to 48-84 in-lbs.
Step 3 — Front Turn Signal Bulbs
The front turn signals are mounted to the fork legs.
- Turn the handlebars to access the turn signal.
- Gently pry off the lens cover using a cloth-wrapped flathead screwdriver.
- Push the bulb in and twist counter-clockwise to release.
- Extract the old bulb.
- Insert the new bulb and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Snap the lens cover back into place.
- Repeat on the other side.
Step 4 — Rear Turn Signal Bulbs
The rear turn signals are mounted on the rear fender struts.
- Loosen the base bolt securing each turn signal housing to the fender.
- Carefully pull the housing outward to expose the rear wiring.
- Remove the rear rubber grommet cover.
- Push the bulb in and twist counter-clockwise to release.
- Extract the old bulb.
- Insert the new bulb and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Replace the rubber grommet and verify it seals.
- Position the housing back into its bracket and tighten the base bolt to 60-96 in-lbs.
Step 5 — Tail / Brake Light Bulb
The tail light is mounted on the rear fender.
- Locate the Phillips head screws on the tail light lens cover.
- Remove the screws and set the lens cover aside.
- The 1157 bulb uses a push-and-twist socket. Push in gently and turn counter-clockwise.
- Remove the old bulb.
- Align the two offset pins on the new 1157 bulb with the socket tabs.
- Push in and rotate clockwise until it locks.
- Wipe the inside of the lens cover with a microfiber cloth.
- Reinstall the lens cover and screws. Torque to 15-25 in-lbs.
Step 6 — License Plate Light Bulb
The license plate light is a small wedge bulb mounted above the plate.
- Locate the license plate light bracket near the rear fender.
- Remove the 5/16" bolt or Phillips screw securing the bracket.
- The 194 bulb is a wedge type — pull it straight out.
- Push the new 194 bulb straight into the socket.
- Reinstall the bracket and tighten the fastener.
Step 7 — Front Running Light Verification
If equipped with separate running light positions:
- The 1157 bulbs serve as both running lights (dim filament) and turn signals (bright filament).
- After replacement, verify both filaments illuminate independently.
Step 8 — Test All Lights
- Turn the ignition to ON.
- Verify headlight low beam illuminates.
- Switch to high beam and verify it illuminates.
- Activate left turn signal — front and rear flash in unison.
- Activate right turn signal — same verification.
- Press the front brake lever — tail light should brighten.
- Press the rear brake pedal — verify same brightening.
- Confirm tail light maintains dim running glow.
- Verify the license plate light is illuminated.
Step 9 — LED Upgrade Considerations
When upgrading to LED: 1. H4 LED headlight: Choose an LED with an adjustable collar for proper beam alignment. Verify the unit fits behind the headlight bucket. 2. Turn Signal LEDs: The Indian platform may hyper-flash with low-draw LED bulbs. Install a load equalizer (consult Indian dealer for compatible part). 3. Tail/Brake LED (1157): Most 1157 LED replacements work plug-and-play. 4. Polarity: LED bulbs are polarized. If one does not light, remove, rotate 180 degrees, and reinsert.
Step 10 — Headlight Aiming
After headlight service: 1. Position the bike 25 feet from a flat wall on level ground. 2. Mark a horizontal line at the height of the headlight center. 3. The top edge of the low beam should be at or slightly below the marked line. 4. Adjust using the headlight bucket adjustment screws. 5. Tighten all adjustment hardware when finished.
Tips & Warnings Table
| Category | Detail |
|---|---|
| ⚠️ WARNING | Never touch halogen bulb glass with bare fingers. Skin oils create hot spots causing premature failure. Always wear nitrile gloves. |
| 🔧 TIP | Keep spare headlight and turn signal bulbs in your saddlebag. A $3 bulb avoids a dangerous ride in the dark. |
| 💡 TIP | Wire load equalizers for LED turn signals in parallel at the turn signal connector for proper load simulation. |
| ⚠️ WARNING | Always re-aim the headlight after any headlight service. Misaimed lighting endangers oncoming traffic and is illegal. |
| 🔧 TIP | Apply dielectric grease to all bulb contacts before installation to prevent corrosion, especially important in humid environments. |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
| Mistake | Consequence | Prevention |
|---|---|---|
| Touching halogen bulb glass | Premature failure | Always wear nitrile gloves |
| Installing H4 bulb incorrectly | Wrong beam pattern; dark spots | Align flat tab downward |
| Forgetting dust cover | Moisture and dust enter headlight | Seat cover firmly before reassembly |
| Using 1156 in dual-filament position | Only one function works | Use correct bulb type for each position |
| Skipping headlight re-aim | Blinds oncoming drivers | Always re-aim at 25 feet |
| Installing LEDs without load equalizers | Hyper-flashing; false warnings | Install resistors at signal wiring |
Proper Disposal
- Halogen bulbs: Dispose with regular household trash. Wrap in paper to prevent breakage.
- LED bulbs: Take to electronics recycling center or auto parts store.
- Used bulbs: Auto parts stores typically accept them for recycling at no cost.
