Step-by-Step Replacement Instructions

Step 1 — Safety First

  1. Park the Sport Glide on a level surface and turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Remove the key and wait for the motorcycle to cool.
  3. Put on nitrile gloves before handling halogen bulbs.

Step 2 — Headlight Bulb Replacement (H4 / 9003)

The Sport Glide uses an H4 bulb inside a sleek, narrow fairing that gives the bike its aggressive sport-touring look.

  1. The headlight is housed inside the fork-mounted fairing. Access is from the rear through the fairing cavity.
  2. If needed, remove the inner fairing wind deflector (typically two 5/32" Allen bolts) to gain better access.
  3. Reach behind the headlight housing and pull off the rubber dust seal.
  4. Disconnect the wiring harness connector by pressing the locking tab.
  5. Squeeze the wire retaining clip, push it up, and release it from its notch.
  6. Pull the old H4 bulb out.
  7. Do NOT touch the glass of the new bulb — use gloves.
  8. Insert the new H4 bulb, aligning the flat prong with the flat side of the socket.
  9. Reinstall the wire retaining clip — press down and hook into the notch.
  10. Reconnect the wiring harness.
  11. Push the rubber dust seal back on, ensuring full circumference contact.
  12. Reinstall the fairing wind deflector if removed.

Step 3 — Front Turn Signal Bulbs (1157NA Amber)

  1. The Sport Glide front turn signals are integrated into the fairing's lower edge.
  2. Each signal is held by a Phillips screw accessible from the front face.
  3. Remove the screw and gently pry the lens away from the housing.
  4. Push the 1157NA bulb in and twist ~1/4 turn counter-clockwise to release.
  5. Install the new bulb (offset pins align one way only), push in, and twist clockwise.
  6. Reinstall the lens and tighten the screw snugly.

Step 4 — Rear Turn Signal Bulbs (1157NA Amber)

  1. The rear signals are mounted on the fender struts at the rear of the bike.
  2. Remove the mounting bolt using a 5/16" socket.
  3. Gently pull the signal away and disconnect the wiring connector.
  4. Twist the bulb socket counter-clockwise to remove from the housing.
  5. Replace the 1157NA bulb using the push-twist method.
  6. Reinstall the socket, reconnect, and re-bolt.

Step 5 — Tail / Brake Light Bulb (1157 Dual Contact)

  1. The tail light is integrated into the chopped rear fender tip.
  2. Remove the lens cover retaining screws (2 Phillips #2 screws).
  3. Carefully pull the lens away from the housing — note the rubber gasket.
  4. Push the 1157 bulb in and twist counter-clockwise to remove.
  5. Install the new 1157 dual-contact bulb (wider offset pin first, push and twist clockwise).
  6. Reinstall the lens and tighten the screws snugly — do not overtighten.

Step 6 — License Plate Light (194 Wedge)

  1. The plate light is mounted behind the plate holder on the rear fender.
  2. Remove the small Phillips screw holding the housing cover.
  3. Pull the 194 wedge bulb straight out.
  4. Push the new 194 bulb straight in.
  5. Reinstall the cover and tighten the screw.

Step 7 — Final Verification

  1. Turn the ignition to ON.
  2. Verify headlight low and high beam.
  3. Verify all four turn signals — steady amber flash rate.
  4. Verify tail light (dim) and brake light (bright) — test both brake inputs.
  5. Verify license plate illumination.

Tips, Warnings & Common Mistakes

Tip / Warning Details
Never touch halogen glass with bare fingers Skin oils reduce bulb life significantly
Use nitrile gloves Handle all halogen bulbs with gloves or clean paper towel
Do NOT force the fairing The Sport Glide fairing snaps fit — use the correct Allen/Torx sizes and work gently
Do NOT over-tighten lens screws Plastic lenses crack with excess torque
LED upgrades may cause hyperflashing Install LED-compatible flasher relay if needed
Replace in pairs When one signal fails, replace both sides
Keep spares on the bike H4 and 1157 spares prevent ride-ending failures

Verification Notes

  1. Headlight aim: Park 25 feet from wall. Low beam should strike 2-3 inches below center.
  2. Flash rate: 60-120 flashes/minute. Fast or uneven flashing suggests ground or wiring issues.
  3. Brake light check: Both brake inputs should trigger full-brightness brake light.
  4. Weather seal: After replacement, verify all rubber gaskets are intact and seated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I upgrade the Sport Glide headlight to a Daymaker LED? Harley-Davidson does not offer a Daymaker LED retrofit specifically for the Sport Glide. The standard H4 halogen can be upgraded to an H4 LED replacement bulb — ensure the LED heat sink fits within the fairing.

Is the Sport Glide fairing difficult to remove? The fairing requires removing 4-6 fasteners (mix of Allen and Torx) and disconnecting the wiring loom if fully removed. For headlight bulb access, you typically do not need to fully remove the fairing — just the inner wind deflector or enough clearance to reach behind the housing.

What LED headlight is recommended for the Sport Glide? Philips X-tremeVision Pro H4 LED or Sylvania ZEVO H4 LED both work well. Verify the LED bulb's heat sink clears the inside of the fairing.
