Step-by-Step Replacement Instructions
Step 1 — Safety First
- Park on a level surface; engage the ignition off.
- Turn the ignition switch to OFF and remove the key.
- Allow the motorcycle to cool completely before beginning work.
- Wear nitrile gloves to prevent skin oils from contaminating halogen bulb glass.
Step 2 — Headlight Bulb Replacement (H4 / 9003)
The Softail Standard uses a traditional round sealed H4 bulb behind the headlight bucket.
- Locate the rubber dust cover on the rear of the headlight bucket.
- Pull the dust cover straight off by gripping the tab or edge.
- Disconnect the wiring harness connector by pressing the locking tab and pulling.
- Release the metal retaining wire clip by squeezing the two ends and pushing up.
- Carefully pull the old H4 bulb straight out of the socket.
- Do not touch the glass of the new bulb with bare fingers. Use gloves or a clean cloth.
- Insert the new H4 bulb with the flat side of the base facing down.
- Reinstall the retaining wire clip by hooking the bottom first, then pressing down.
- Reconnect the wiring harness connector until it clicks.
- Replace the rubber dust cover and ensure it seats fully.
Step 3 — Front Turn Signal Bulbs (1157NA — Amber)
The front turn signals are mounted in the fork lower leg assemblies.
- Turn the handlebars to access the turn signal you want to replace.
- Gently pry off the amber lens cover using a flathead screwdriver wrapped in cloth.
- Push the bulb in slightly and twist counter-clockwise to release from the socket.
- Pull the old bulb straight out.
- Insert the new 1157NA amber bulb into the socket and twist clockwise to lock.
- Press the lens cover back into place until it snaps.
- Repeat on the other side.
Step 4 — Rear Turn Signal Bulbs (1157NA — Amber)
The rear turn signals are mounted in the rear fender support struts.
- Loosen the retaining bolt at the base of the turn signal housing.
- Gently pull the turn signal assembly away from the fender.
- Remove the rear rubber grommet cover to access the bulb socket.
- Push the bulb in slightly and twist counter-clockwise to release.
- Pull the old 1157NA amber bulb out.
- Insert the new bulb and twist clockwise to lock.
- Reinstall the rubber grommet cover.
- Position the assembly back into the fender bracket and tighten the bolt.
Step 5 — Tail / Brake Light Bulb (1157 — Dual Contact)
The tail and brake light share a single dual-filament 1157 bulb in the rear fender.
- Remove the two Phillips screws holding the rear fender tail light lens cover.
- Carefully set the lens cover aside.
- The 1157 bulb is a push-and-twist type. Push in gently and rotate counter-clockwise.
- Pull the old bulb out.
- Align the two offset pins on the new 1157 bulb with the socket tabs.
- Push in and twist clockwise to lock.
- Clean the inside of the lens cover with microfiber cloth.
- Reinstall the lens cover and Phillips screws. Torque to 25-35 in-lbs.
Step 6 — License Plate Light Bulb (194 / W5W / T10)
The license plate light is a small wedge bulb mounted under the rear fender.
- Locate the license plate light housing under the rear fender near the plate bracket.
- Remove the 5/16" bolt or Phillips screw holding the light housing.
- The 194 bulb is a wedge-type — pull it straight out of the socket.
- Insert the new 194 bulb by pushing it straight in.
- Reinstall the housing and tighten the bolt/screw.
Step 7 — Front Running Light Verification (1157)
Some Softail Standard configurations have separate front running lights.
- If equipped, the running lights share the 1157 bulb in the front turn signal housings.
- Follow the same procedure as Step 3 for front turn signals.
- Verify dual-filament function (running light + turn signal).
Step 8 — Test All Lights
- Turn the ignition to ON (do not start the engine).
- Test the low beam headlight.
- Switch to high beam headlight.
- Test the left turn signal (front and rear).
- Test the right turn signal (front and rear).
- Press the brake lever — verify bright filament illumination.
- Squeeze rear brake pedal — verify bright filament illumination.
- Verify the tail light dims appropriately (running light mode).
- Check the license plate light is illuminated.
Step 9 — LED Upgrade Considerations
If upgrading to LED bulbs:
- Headlight LED (H4): H4 LEDs must have proper beam pattern to avoid blinding oncoming traffic. Aim the headlight after installation.
- Turn Signal LEDs: Harley-Davidson CAN bus may interpret low-draw LEDs as burnt-out bulbs, causing hyper-flashing. Install a load equalizer (Harley-Davidson p/n 68194-04) for each turn signal pair.
- Tail/Brake LED (1157): Most 1157 LED replacements work plug-and-play without resistors.
- Polarity matters: LED bulbs have positive and negative terminals. If an LED does not light, remove it, rotate 180°, and reinsert.
Step 10 — Headlight Aiming Verification
- Position the bike 25 feet from a flat wall on level ground.
- The center of the low beam hotspot should be at or slightly below headlight center height.
- Adjust using the two vertical adjustment screws on the headlight bucket if needed.
- Tighten adjustment screws to specification.
Tips & Warnings Table
| Category | Detail |
|---|---|
| ⚠️ WARNING | Never touch a halogen bulb glass with bare fingers. Body oils cause hot spots that lead to premature bulb failure. Always use gloves or a clean cloth. |
| 🔧 TIP | Buy spare bulbs for your most critical lights and store them in your saddlebag. A burnt-out headlight turns a pleasant ride into a dangerous one. |
| 💡 TIP | When upgrading to LED turn signals, remember to install load equalizers or your bike will hyper-flash. Install them at the turn signal wiring, not at the fuse box. |
| ⚠️ WARNING | After any headlight replacement, always re-aim the headlight. An improperly aimed headlight is illegal and dangerous. |
| 🔧 TIP | Apply a thin coat of dielectric grease to all bulb contacts before installation to prevent corrosion, especially in Florida humid conditions. |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
| Mistake | Consequence | Prevention |
|---|---|---|
| Touching halogen bulb glass with bare fingers | Bulb overheats and fails prematurely | Always wear nitrile gloves |
| Installing 1157 bulb with wrong pin alignment | Bulb will not seat; one filament misaligned | Align the two offset pins before twisting |
| Forgetting load equalizers with LED turn signals | Hyper-flashing; false bulb-out warning on dash | Install resistors per turn signal pair |
| Not aiming headlight after H4 replacement | Blinds oncoming traffic; fails inspection | Re-aim at 25 feet on a flat wall |
| Omitting the headlight rubber dust cover | Moisture and dust enter the headlight bucket | Always reinstall the cover fully |
| Using wrong polarity on LED bulbs | LED will not light | If LED does not work, flip 180° and retry |
Proper Disposal
- Halogen bulbs: Can be disposed of with regular household trash — they do not contain mercury. However, wrap used bulbs in paper to prevent glass breakage.
- LED bulbs: Do not dispose in regular trash. Take to an electronics recycling center or auto parts store that accepts LED bulbs.
- Burnt-out bulbs: Even if non-hazardous, consider taking to an auto parts store — many accept used bulbs for recycling.
